I am looking for some ideas. I dont want to go to the dealer and get screwed out of money I could be putting towords mods. My engine makes a knocking noise. I have been told by those who dont know these engines have self adjusting valves that I might need a valve adjustment. I have changed the oil as well (another suggestion given to me). Its a little hard to describe, a steady click-click-click that gets louder when i push on the gas. If anyone has any suggestions of what it might possible be so I can use my cheap reasources (freinds) before spending way too much at the dealer I would appreciate it.

Spun balance shaft or rod bearings.

Wanna Know the easy way out, my car did the exact same thing. Took it to the mechanic, said all i had to do was get some of that fuel injection treatment to clean the system out, used it for 2 tanks, and then changed my oil (used the Valvoline 10-30, for higher mileage engines") after it cleaned itself out I havnt heard a peep out of it, its been like 2 months, so it worked, and Only had to spend abou 10 bucks. Maybe thats all your problem is. worth a try i guess;)

"click or tick". Good question. Now that you mention it the better word to describe it would be a "TICK" rather than a "CLICK". Im almost positive it is not an exhaust leak, and I dont really know what lifter tick is, but I will check both out and try the fuel injection trick. Any other ideas will be helpful as well:thumb:

u have lifter tick like everyone else...does it effect performance..causeif it doesnt then dont worry bout it put an upper lube cleaner in there andit goes away

actually puttin an oil breather on my car made it stop...comepletely...cleaner oil???

Someone in the earlier post said to put fuel injection treament in two tanks then change the oil. he said it worked for him. "upper lifter tick"?? What is that exactly? Does it effect performance, I dont really think so, but it sounds like crap. i hate rolling out and starting my car or even going through a drive through cause it sounds awful (and it is extreamly annoying). I have never heard of an oil breather (keep in mind guys I am a girl ;) is that something I could get from NAPA or some place like that?

quick way to check if you have spun a rod bearing is to drain your oil and look for tiny brass chunks. sort of looks like that stuff floating in the bottom of a bottle of goldslager liquer.

You would know if it was a spun bearing when you drive the car. What he is describing is lifter tick more than likely. Buy the 3rd revision lifters and be done with it.

Fuel injectors do tick sometimes (usually when they are dirty, clogged, or about to fail), but you should be able to tell if the tick is coming from the valve cover/head, or the fuel injectors/rail.

Check vfaq. It usually either consists of putting a fuel filter inline of the hose that relieve crankcase pressure from the valve cover to the intake pipe, or doing away with the hose all together and putting a small "breather" filter on.

sounds like lifter tap,
as far as the fuel system cleaner,,
the people who are refering to this are refering to your injectors being dirty,, dirty injectors "tick" more ,or louder, then normal.
the best thing to use to clean your injectors, beleave it or not,, it to just put a very small amount of AUTO tranns fluid in with a fill up in your tank.
i know there will be people here who dont know anything about cars and will call me crazy,, so let me exsplain a little.
Those efi cleaners you pay all that money for are just a fuel blends of high deterent. which in the long run helps clean you injectors,, AUTO tranns fluid is nothing more then a Super High deterjent oil (why do you think an auto tranny can operate so long on a single fluid change, and yet be so clean!)
buy using a small amount (meaning like an 1/8th of a cup in with a full tank of gas) will do just the same, but be more effective then those cleaners you pay good money for.
and will not harm your fuel system,, or engine, the oil part of it will simply pass and burn off (your car is not going to smoke,, your talking about an extreamly small amount with a full tank of gas)
This works well,, i have done it with several cars,, and the effect it has on the injectors is shocking.

Now,,
Like i said before,, still sounds to me like lifter tap, which if it is the case.
one or more lifters are not completly filling with oil as they should, causing them to bottum out while your engine is running, hence the "ticking" noise.
this is usaly caused by dirt in the engine clogging the oil passages that allow the lifters to fill up,, guess what is the best (And Safest) way to clean an engine? you guessed it,, about a half qaurt of auto trans fluid with an oil change,.
Again,, super high detergent oil.

but in extream cases, lifters tick due to the springs inside just plan worn out.

Hope all this helps.

Isaac

Well, it seems like the consenciouse is I have lifter tick. I appreciate all the help and will try the tranny fluid and see what that does. im due for an oil change anyway.:thumb:
