Today I took out the throttle body to clean it. It was dirty as hell but now its spotless (use tb cleaner). Anyways, I put it back on the car and hooked everything up and when I started her up she immediately jumped to ~4k and stayed there, I let it run for a minute or two and it didnt change. I got scared so I went back and took the throttle body back out and I had messed up when putting the gasket in and the gasket broke. So just to see if it works for now I went and put the throttle body back in without a gasket (dont flame, plz read first). And then went back and started it up. It idled high 4kish and after a moment or two came down to 1500, only for a sec before jumping up to 2500, and it bounces between 1500 and 2500 forever... i let it run for a long time, i raced the engine and it returns to 1500 and bounces between 1500 and 2500. It's like it can't find idle. The other thing I realized was that when cleaning the throttle body cleaner - I sprayed it all inside the tb and didnt cover up the idle air passage - that has that sensor. But i dried it out - is that my problem? Or can just not having a gasket make it do that? I didn't mess with any other adjustments so im confused.
BTW i did disconnect the battery and let it reset, it does the same thing, when I start it up it jumpts to 3-4k and stays there for a sec or 2 and then falls down to 1500 and bounces between that and 2500. What should I do?

Any air that is getting sucked in thru the cracks will cause the idle to jump very high. First things first. Get a new gasket and make sure that all air leaks are completely sealed.
I've heard [but cannot verify] that the cold air idle valve thingy can be damaged by solvents, which would make the idle stay high since the engine would be running as if the engine was cold [high idle] as that thingy is not reducing the 'bypass' air like it should.
...But like I just wrote - get the new gasket installed first... then write back!!
ALSO... check all the small vacuum hoses for cracks and splits and leaks. Any air that is getting sucked in will screw up the idle!!!

Yea first thing tomorrow morning ill do the gasket - the vacuum line on top of my tb appears old and cracked - well it hasn't given problems before - but maybe?

Good... do the gasket thing... and write back.
Also check the big black rubber air intake duct for old age cracks!! Mine cracked open from all the flexing that I did to it when monkeying with my TB... and the engine ran like crap!

Do you mean the actual intake piping? Mine's in good condition, but the vacuum connector (that is rubber) on top of the tb that connects it to a plastic line - thats showing LOTS of surface cracks.

Hey guys - well its fixed. I don't know exactly what i did... but - I took the tb back out - opened up the IAS sensor and cleaned it up - was dirty as hell too. Then I cleaned out the idle air pathway. Then I put it back in (still haven't gotten the gasket - i know) and started her up and she died right away - started her up again and BAM! idling right at 900-1000 haha and a little bit later its around 800 steady. I drove her around and its fine now. Next thing i need to do is get that gasket. Thanks for your help.
