Where are the synchros?????

I was just wondering where the synchros are? I just changed the clutch on my car and had the transmission welded because it had a crack in it. After the mechanic put everything back the gears are grinding big time. It's a pain to put it in first gear, nearly impossible to downshift on the fly and when I'm riding and need to put in a shift the clutch almost goes all the way down and I have to pump the clutch pedal a lot of times for it to take the gears. What could this be? Can in only be the synchros? A bad mechanical job?.....:confused:
 
Sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment and/or your clutch line had air in it (Improperly bled or not at all).

Take it back to the shop that did the work and have them fix it.

BTW.. the syncros are internal to the tranny and act like clutches to get the gears spinning the same RPMs as the input shaft btw shifts.
 
The thing is I bled it myself a couple of time already and the mechanic did it too. He's telling me it's the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder. I don't think it's that since I changed it like a year and a half ago when i got my first clutch installed and it was grinding also, after that it got better but it still grinded in third gear. Now i got the other clutch in and it's doing the same thing even worse.
 
It's very possible that you do need new syncros.. heck mine is funny in third also.. but I mitigated the problems by using BG Syncroshift fluid adjusting the clutch a-la TRE and getting the Symborski metal shifter bushing kit.
 
Thanks man, the only thing is I don't understand half the words mentioned in this clutch adjusting steps. Can anyone put it slightly easier for me.

"Raise the cruise cut switch" ? "Loosen the jamb nut and back out the cruise cut switch as far as possible yet still allowing the pedal to close the switch" ? "Now adjust the actuator rod, removing all but a titch of free play between the rod and master cylinder...."

I would really appreciated if someone put it a bit easier, or at least tell me where the cruise cut switch is and the other parts mentioned.

The cruise cut swich (and all the other parts mentioned) are under the dash and connected/part of the clutch pedal. Just work the clutch up-and-down whilst under there and you'll get the picture.

There is also a clutch-in-to-start swich which is a good idea to disconnect (especially on a 2G with aftermarket clutch) as depressing the clutch on a cold engine can accellerate wear on the crankshaft thrust bearing causing "crankwalk". Just remember to start the car in neutral :D
 
I guess I can't adjust it anymore since it looks like it's already been done. I was able to only give it like 2 more spins out.

If what's on this pic is the cruise control switch, I did adjust it a bit, but there was not much to adjust.:dsm:

That picture illustrates why I believe the ACT 2600 pressure plate needs to be redesigned. There is no excuse for the adjustment to be that far out, when a car will have 1" more rod threaded in on a stock (not slipping) clutch. Both of my talons (AWD) had the same adjustment, and the last one has a SS clutch line, fidanza flywheel, and a new clutch master cylinder, and I did check for a worn pedal assy.

Shimming the pivot ball will help I believe, but ACT needs to find a permanent fix for this. I'm not using another one, I'm going to go twin-disc. :cool:
 
That doesn't work: I shimmed the slave cyl rod, and it didn't fully release, and it didn't fix the problem.

The hydraulics can't be modified at that end, or the clutch will never release. Design flaw is what I'm sticking to for now. ;)
 
I guess it's the synchro's then. Since the slave cylinder is not leaking or anything neither does the clutch master cylinder and they're both like a year and a half old.... The cheap mechanic did not resurface the flywheel...can that be part of teh problem?
