need help, put new timing belt on daughters 90 Talon, reassembled, started up right away, purring like a kitten for about 5 minutes, then clunk and it dies! Didn't know what happened, pulled top cover off and the new belt was way loose, disassembled again, now the cam gears show the timing marks at 12 o'clock on both instead of 3 and 9. I couldn't turn crank and realign them belt had slipped, now I have got #1 at TDC crank on mark Oil pump on mark, what do I do with cam gears, to get them back in position

hmm are the cam gears lose themselves..when you turned over the motor did the cam gears spin..because usually when you spin or 'turn over' the motor the cam gears will line up at the '3 and 9' position when the #1 is at tdc..
What sort of a 'snap' was it? did you look at the auto tensioner or replace it? How does everything on the front clip assembly look?
keep us posted..

the cam gears are not loose, I can only describe the noise as a clunk. Can I turn the cam gears the same way I turned the crank with out turning the whole system? looks to me like crank turned and cams didn't. At this point I have all plugs out, have TDC on #1, have crank and oil pump aligned, belt is off can I turn cams to proper position or do I pull head. I guess my question is what will I do If I put socket on camgear bolt and turn to position?

yes ,Idid check the tensioner, loosened bottom allen screw, set upright, compressed pin,puy small pin in hole to hold in place remounted it pulled pin worked fine . When I compressed pin it had lots of resistance, so I assumed it OK, I can replace if I should. Still have same problem. Can I turn the cam pulleys to realign timing marks before replacing belt. I have #1At,TDC, crank and oil pump on marks, I just need to align cam marks, If so can I tell when it's right, with out removing head

hmm, you'd get resistance right before 9 oclock on intake side and right before 3 oclock on exhaust side, but im not sure if you can do it, and i wouldn't recommend it, you could throw off your timing severly...
both cam gears at the 12 oclock position now?
hmm i'd pull the head and check it out, but thats just how i am (ask anyone that knows me on this board)...
because you have the shortblock assembly at #1 tdc, but the head isn't in 'sequence' with your shortblock, meaning your cams wouldn't and probably aren't 'timed' with your pistons (not very good situation to be in)..i don't know how to tell if its 'right' without removing the head, anyone else?
best of luck

OK here's what I've done, rotated cam gears to proper position, aligned crank and oil pump marks, have #1 at TDC, installed belt, rotated everything from crank till cam marks realigned, piston at top, did it again, piston at top, this should mean I'm OK ? I plan on putting it all back togeather and trying to start it up unless someone tells me different. Thanks for the input.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM MY TIMING BELT SKIPPED AT A STOP LIGHT SO I PULLED THE COVERS OFF PUT THE TIMING BELT BACK ON AND SLOWLY TURNED IT CLOCKWISE UNTIL THE CAMS WERE CLOSE TO THE TIMING MARKS. THEN I REALINGED THE CAMS WITH THE CRANK AND THE OIL SPROCKET. STARTED IT UP AND IT RUNS JUST FINE. JUST MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE CRANK WITH A WRENCH WHEN ITS ALL ALIGNED AND IF YOU HEAR SOMETHING HITTING EACH OTHER ITS PROBABLY NOT TIMED RIGHT. GOOD LUCK
