ok i searched before i posted but didnt get the answers i wanted..

i got a stock 1990 plymouth laser rs turbo with 160,000 miles on it.. well to start off, when the engine is hot there is smoke coming from the turbo area and it smells like burnt oil.. is this a major problem? is it the seals and does that mean i need a whole new turbo?

2nd problem.. when i first start the car and it cold, the exhaust will blow white smoke and big puffs if i rev it.. but once i start driving it goes away right away, and stays away once i park it and let it idle for awhile.. what could this be? head gasket? the guy told me he replaced the valve seals 1000 miles ago and that the exhaust is still burning out but he might have just been screwing with me..

for question 1 with that many miles on the turbo. the oil seals could be gone which would end up smelling like oil but youd notice blue smoke in the exhaust. can you trace where the smoke is comming from. exhasut manifold to turbo? or turbo to o2 hosing/downpipe.

for your second question. it will be white when its cold on a start up becuase the exhaust is hotter than the air hence condensation. if it were your head gasket you would notice white smoke while your driving even after your engine is fully heated.

hope that somewhat helps.its late at night so my brains lazy.:thumb:

also, my friends dad has a '93 rx7 and he says the turbos leak a little and he has the same smell like i have.. so i was just figuring thats common with turbos?

sorry for the stupid sounding questions but i dont know shit about turbos..

well were our turbos are oil and water cooled. and with that many miles it wouldnt be surprising if the seals are going in the turbo. white smoke is antifreeze so it could be going also could be contributing to the white smoke from your exhaust. best thing is do like i did. swap that out and drop in the evo iii 16g from sbr. never had any problems with it. spools like a beast.:thumb:

the oil hasnt gone down in 2 days and there is no water on the dipstick.. i opened the cap to look at the coolent and it smelled like coolent mixed with fish, any ideas towards that?

Have you done the compression test yet? It'll save a lot of the guesswork we're doing here. Right now we're fishing in the dark as to what it could be. But do change your coolant. The smell of fish is never a good sign. It definitely isn't for ECU's. As for the turbo, you check the side to side shaft play? How does it spool? It really sounds like a blown turbo with the oil burning in it.

ya guys, seeing as i dont know shit about turbos, i didnt think anything about the OIL in the front of the turbo when i checked the shaft play.. even oil in the tube that runs to the air filter..

so today i might buy a 14b from a guy that used to go to my school and see if when i replace it, i cured my problem..

well today i got a compression tester from NAPA to check the compression.. i dont know why but the first 2 were 120 and the last 2 were 118.. i thought they were supposed to be around 170.. could this be just from a POS tester or what?

ok so i read more on how to do a compression test and i did it right this time.. plugs unplugged, WOT, a couple turnovers.. and the compression was around 140 for all.. is this allright?

if you smell burning oil, and you do not have exhaust smoke with a blue hue than the smell must be from oil burning externally I.E. valve cover gasket, oil return line on the turbo/oil feed line to the turbo. those are most common. Or even unbolt the exhaust manifold and valve ports to check for fresh oil. it should have dry greyish carbon deposits even flakes of carbon deposits (easily cleaned off with chemtool, or any carb cleaner) if they are wet looking or "gooey" this means oil is leaking from inside your motor could be bad valves or bad rings. but you said you didn't see blue exhaust. Also take off down pipe, if theres no oil in exhaust manifold but oil in downpipe/ O2 housing means turbo is bad. I also have a friend that had a cracked valve cover which was spraying oil (check for cracks). Another common problem is a bad/cracked oil cap. oil found in these areas should be checked for its source.
