I read the vfaq on lifter noise and how to remove them from the engine, clean, and reassemble. My problem is that i am unable to get the lifters to collapse after i remove them. The instructions say to stick a paperclip in the hole in the top of the lifter until it reaches the bottom, then push a little harder and "you can easily collapse the lifter" Except I cannot easily or otherwise collapse the lifter. I tried with 8 different lifters and had no luck. Even pushed the paperclip using a pair of needle nose pliers. I pushed hard enough that i bent the paperclip, which made me nervous...I don't want that breaking off inside!

anybody care to tell me what i'm doing wrong?

thanks

maybe too thick of a paper clip. I admit it was a tad tricky to get it figured out the first time ( about 8 years ago) but after getting the first one, they are all pretty easy now. I use pretty thin paper clips that are stuck to a magnet in my tool box.

Use a thin paperclip that you've straightened well or a small, long allen wrench; you'll move it around in the lifter until it finds the pressure release hole in the bottom of the lifter at which point it'll go down a little more as you press it. It doesn't take a lot of force, just being in the correct place for it to release. I prefer to use a set of welding tip cleaners since they straight, hardened wires of various sizes; it makes finding the largest one that will fit correctly easy and gives a large grip area to hold while I'm cleaning the lifters in the diesel fuel (slippery stuff!).

See if this video helps you out.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

that was a great video

i must have been missing the valve in the bottom when i stuck the paperclip inside.

Great vid! What was the CAS that was on that head? It looked different than any 1g CAS i've seen and didn't look like a 2g but i couldn't get a good look at it from teh camera moving about. Again, great tutorial/vid. I'm sur eit will help a lot of people.. Maybe this thread could be modified , cleaned up and put in the tech section with your vid in it!

When I first did a set of lifters, I used a paper clip as stated above, mine was pretty think though because of the revised lifters I had....But anywho,I couldn't collapse them for the life of me, everthing that you said above happened to me.

There is a little hole in there, you have to go in almost perfectly straight or it wont go in and collapse it.... heres a juvenile drawing of the inside I'm sure you get the idea....

Get between those to I's its very easy to put it in the wrong place and bend the paper clip....
