i just bought a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd. the stock 14b thats in it is going bad. if i buy a used 14b, what other parts do i need to insure that the new one will go right in? im new to the DSM's as one can tell, but im in love with my new car and would love to get a new turbo into it. thanks! :talon:

Why do you think your turbo is going?

All you have to do is take the old one out and put the new one in. Theres nothing needed as when you buy a new one, it comes in one piece. You just have to take off your coolant and oil lines goin to it and connect them to the new one.

All 14bs are the same unless someone upgraded the exhaust housing.

You will need a manifold to turbine housing gasket, turbine housing to o2 gasket, an oil return gasket and new crush washers for your oil and coolant lines. It's not a bad job to do. Congrats on your purchase and welcome.

thanks! i know it is going bad due to the fact of it feeling slow on some days and fast on the others. also you can only hear it respool when it down shifts. you could hear it when you upshifted when i first got it, but afterwards it stopped. im looking on the classifieds for a turbo so i just needed some info on them. thanks again!

I would check for shaft play to see if it is truely going bad.

How to do that you ask. What you have to do is remove your intake and push and pull on the turbine shaft (what the blades and on) and see if it moves back and forth or up and down. If your car puffs out some bluish smoke, then thats also a sign that your turbo seals are bad.

Make sure the car is off and cold.
unhook the air intake pipe from the turbo inlet.
reach in with your fingers and grab the end of the compressor shaft and try to wiggle it.
in and out is bad, a little up and down is ok, just as long as the up and down doesnt allow the compressor wheel to contact the housing.

your going to need an exhaust manifold gasket, o2 housing gasket, turbo to manifold gasket. Most 14b's dont come with coolant lines or oil feed or return lines but......you can just reuse your coolant lines and oil feed and return lines from your bad 14b. You should check for shaft play first just to make sure its the turbo....most 14b's have a little shaft play.
