I had a place install my thermal research and design cat-back exhaust(99 gst spyder),when the guy was road testing it, the clutch failed. And here's the exact detail's. When it was ready to go out this guy ask me if i wanted to road test it and i said no because i wanted to here what it sounded like when he drove by. So we went out back so he could pass by, and when he stopped and asked me again if i wanted to drive it and i said no. So he went down the road and we waited for him to come back and he did it just took him awhile, so after he drove pass agin we went in side and five minutes later he came back saying the car doesn't move. So we went down to go look at it and there was no clutch. It would go in gear but not move. And the clutch smelled bad. So after we got it back to the shop, we took off the cover to see the flywheel underneath, and inside the transmission was 1/2 of clutch material laying on the inside of the transmission. So the manger said there was a mechanical failue and i don't know of anything that would fail. Theres nothing that would casue the clutch to engage and then grind itself out and then release when there is nothing left. The guy was gone for abouty 5-7 minutes and i found out from another technician that he isn't that great at driving stick, and is for the time being, banned from doing so. It also took him awhile to do the normal passes which is leading me to believe he destroyed the clutch. So can you burn up a clutch if you can't drive stick shift or is there something that would fail that would cause it to burn the clutch up. The company and i have made an agreement that is fair to both of us. However it is costing them a lot more money to take care of this issue and i'm not looking to rip anybody off,i just want my car back. There was still a pedal at the time it happened on monday around noon time, and this morning their was no pedal, however we have been pushing this car in and out of the shop to move it daily and you have to press the clutch pedal to start it. So any imput would be appciated and also is this a known problem. They had their transmission "expert" come down to look at it and he said the pressure plate failed, because the pedal was on the floor and that this is a common problem of eclipse's burning up clutches.(The expert didn't know that it actually had a clutch pedal after the incident). SO please let me know what you think or have exprienced.

Check out this Tech Article on RRE's site. They have a bunch of info on clutch failures / adjustment issues.

In very extreme case, even clutch friction surfaces can crack and fail if driven slipping long enough. This busted stock clutch cut apart the bell housing, starter and radiator.

The smell is probably from the organic disk glazing and burning, it's a horrible smell. There is something that would make it "grind itself out" though, -riding the clutch or improper clutch adjustment, which leads to pedal pump up on 2Gs, you can read about pump up on RRE's site.

You have to depress the clutch to start because of the electric switch connected to the pedal. With the dead pedal, it sounds even more like pump up, it may have caused enough pressure to burst something. Or you have a different hydraulic issue.

It's possible the pressure plate failed, but I'm thinking you should check the clutch lines, clutch master and slave cylinders first.
