im planning on removing my motor/tranny as a whole this week.
my question is how do i get the ac pump off the back of the block before i pull the motor/tranny out the engine bay? i know id have to disconnect the mount that holds it on but how would i get to it with the motor in the car still it seems impossible to get down there??? thanks in advance..... 1g gsx

I removed my intake manifold first. Then loosened 3 of the 4 bolts cause they were all I could get to. The I started to pull the motor. After I had clearance I loosened the last bolt, and then removed the AC compressor. It's real tight...

Definately a pain. A combination of removing the drivers wheel and axle (which had to come out anyways) and waiting untill the very last second to remove it from the block (when it was attached to the lift and motor mounts were off) proved to be very easy. I was able to remove it from the bottom/side of the car with pleanty of clearance to spare.

I'm talking the very, very, very, very last thing.

Dude, remove it from the top. You don't need to take off the driver's wheel or anything. Just feel around for the bolts. It's a tight fit to get it out the top, but it will come out (just as mine did). Make sure to remove the belt and the disconnect the lines going to it before you try though, obviously.

Similar scenario. I removed my tranny through the bottom and my motor through the top. left ac/ps and drivers side wheel/axle on. It didn't seem like I could squeeze it out either way with tranny/engine connected. If I removed the intake manifold you think I could put tranny/engine in through the bottom?

if i remove the lines to the ac wont that ac fluid or whatever leak out? shouldnt i just ubolt the ac compressor from the mounting bracket on the back of the block instead? what would happen if i removed the ac lines though would the ac still work? i accidently removed an ac line on my friends gst that were currently doing a swap on, the ac line started leaking pressure loud hissing sound. will the ac still work when i swap in the new motor? im a noob at all this ac stuff, i dont know much about it. thanks in advance

IF you accidentally disconnect an AC line you must be careful not to get burned by the fridgerant. The AC will still work fine as long as you get it recharged and reconnect all the lines before you try and use it. If not you may burn up the compressor as the refridgerant acts as a lubricant.

I guess I didn't quite understand what you were doing. If you still want the AC to work, then don't disconnect the lines running to the compressor. I thought you were just removing it before you pulled the engine and trans.

If your removing your A/C entirely
- go ahead and disconnect the lines but be ready to stand back.

If your A/C doesn't currently work, and you would like it to
- disconnect the compressor anyways, seeing you'll probably need to replace all the seals and O-Rings to keep the new freon(sp?) that you'd want to put back in from leaking out.

If your A/C works and you want it to continue working
- Leave all the lines connected and hang the compressor somewhere out of the way.

......Sometimes I wish I still had my A/C  Oh well... more power, and one less thing that could fail.

what does it mean to recharge your ac compressor?? im guessing take it to the dealer and have them fill it up with ac fridgerent?

Recharging your AC is getting Freon added to the system. Most shops can do it, any dealer should be able to do it, and you can even buy those recharge bottles now from like PepBoys or Autozone...

Freon's off the market. You can get replacement formulations for Freon, change over to 134a, or get a Freon re-charge from a shop that has it in stock.

well what worked great for me was leaving it for the last thing to take from the engine. I lifter the engine with the hoist to were the ac bolts werent so tight to the chasi. this way I was able to take the top bolts from the top and the botom bolts from the bottom with plenty of space to move. and just hang the ac compressor with some wire or rope to the chasi so that you wont have to disconect the lines and have to deal with recharging the system. I hope this helps the next guy with ac removal problems.
