bad turbo?

aite guys..i have a 97 tsi with 136000 and i think the turbo might be going. It blows blue once it warms up and after i boost it. It has some side to side play and some in and out, but i dont know how much is too much..it makes a sound like it hits something when it moves side to side..also, it will spin if i move it, but will not keep spinning..normal?..finally would it blow blue even at idle if it was the turbo? p.s. no oil on the plugs, so dont think its internal..thanks for the help

Everything you described are signs of a bad turbo. There should be no in and out shaftplay, and minimal up and down. If it's moving enough to hit something, that's definitely too much. The blue smoke is most likely caused by oil being pushed past the bearings in the turbo. Now would be a good time to upgrade from the t25

i agree, when my turbo went side to side movement was very little and in out was about the same but as soon a i fired it up it looked something form 007, i had this huge smoke screen coming from the back of my car. but anyway def the in and out movement i would be concerded about cause the bearings are def worn. and alwoing oil to flow right by and through ## exhaust.

so it would still blow blue at idle? sorry guys, im new to the whole turbo thing, but i still love it i just thought it would only do it under boost...thanks for the help

yes even at idel it would blow blue smoke, casue when the seals go it allows oil by pass the seals at it flows right out your exhaust it wont be as noticable at idle casue oil pressure is lower but as your rpms increas your oil pressure will, wich will casue more oil to by pass the seals in the turbo which will casue more smoke to come out your exhaust. does that kinda help out more. if u have any more guestions feel free to ask.
