Turbo Is Making An Unsual Noise...help...

Ok Fist Of This Is What I Did,i Have A 94 Bone Stock Gsx Wich I Was Replaceing A Cracked Exhaust Manifold. So I Bought The Usual 4 Bolts New Studs,and 2g Exhaust Manifold. Well I Replaced Everything Bolted Everything Down Started The Car And I Started To Drive But As Soon As I Got Into Boost My Turbo Made A Loud Whyning Noise Like If I Was Not Getting Oil To It Or Something. Plus It Smells Like Iam Burning Metal On Metal,kind Of Like Brake Pad Smell. I Know It Has To Be The Turbo Because The Noise Is Only Under Boost And It Increases As Boost Increases. Any Thought Of What I Might Have Done Wrong? Well Iam Going To Take The Turbo Off Tommorow To See What The Hell Would Be Making That Noise.

Check for up and down shaft play when the intake is off, it could be the fins rubbing against the housing. Also, try to look into the inlet for a wear line by the tips of the blades in the compressor housing, or wear on the outside of the blades. When my 14b went out it sounded like a roots style supercharger.

Is the car smoking?

If the turbo is whining under boost and your pushing white/gray smoke, your turbo is probably shot.....

The only other noise that is boost related like that is a boost leak, symptoms include: running really rich, black soot from muffler, bad gas mileage, erratic idle, loss of power..........
Did you check for exhaust/boost leaks after you replaced the manifold?

I Didnt Check For Boost Leaks Which Iam Going To But When I Had The Turbo Off I Did Check For Play And There Was None. My Car Is Stock And It Has Never Seen A Boost Controler. My Car Is Not Smokeing At All,iam Wondering Since Now I Dont Have The Cracked Manifold The Turbo Is Working As It Should Now So Now This Shit Comes Up. Its Just Strange But I Still Have Lag Even After The New Manifold. I Dont Get Strong Boost Untill 3+ Rpms On A 14b,something Is Wrong. Iam Just Going To Have Take It All Of And Inspect For The Usual Stuff.

It Just That The Turbo Did Not Make This Supercharge Sound Untill I Changed The Manifold. There For I Am Blaming My Self For This New Problem,i Did Have Lag But I Asumed It Was Because Of The Exhaust Manifold But I Still Have Lag Now Even After The New Manifold. I Might Just Buy A New Turbo But I Didnt Want To Take The Step Yet. Thanks For The Responses Guys.

Well I Was Right I Did Make A Mistake,it Was The J-pipe,my Friend That Was Helping Me Left On Of The 2 Bolts Lose As I Saw That He Was Going To Take It Off But I Told Him There Was No Need To Since It Can Be Left On The Turbo When I Was Going To Remove It. I Just Tightend The Bolt No More Noise,but Man The Turbo Is Still Laggy,is It Normal On A Bone Stock Car With 104,000 Miles With A 14b To Have About 8 Pounds Of Boost At 3100 Ish Rpp?????

it might still be leaking, even if the noise is gone, do you have a gasket between the j-pipe and turbo and a gasket between the turbo/manifold? Double check all of the turbo/manifold bolts for tightness as well. You still need to do a boost leak test, just becuase you don't hear it leaking....doesn't mean your good to go

i thought it was pretty normal for a 14b to be fully spooled at around 3,000 rpm.

I agree. A 14b turbo should be fully spooled around 3000-3100 rpm. That's completely normal. An intake manifold should not cause lag anyways.

Yeah An Exhaust Manifold Should Not Cause The Turbo To Lag Only A Intake Manifold. I Never Removed The J-pipe Gasket And I Did But The Exhaust Manifold To Turbo Gasket. I Torqued The Manifold Bolts All 4 To I Belive It Was Something Like 40 Something Pounds Like It Said In The Factory Manual. I Will Make My Own Boost Leak Tester This Weekend To Find If I Have Any. But I Am Also Going By That Weak Ass Factory Boost Gauge,i Did Buy A Boost Gauge And I Will Be Instaling It This Weekend As Well,for A More Accurate Diagnosis.
