i just picked up a 1990 eclipse gsx a couple days ago, it ran awsome drove it all around town, it was running perfect. when i whent out around 10 pm and i started it up and it was making a realy loud squeely noise, and when i would poke at the throttle wit my foot it would do it up untill 1500 rpm when driving it it would not do it only when at idle. i got a 90k service done on it, and they said the noise isnt coming frome the belts (like i thought)all the belts looked brand new , it sounds like its coming from the water pump, the said it sounds like a bearin, because when at idle you can hear i slight grinding sound and some times a loud sound. so with this realy crapy discription can anyone give me an answer on what they think it is? thanks. i plane on buying a new water pump, timing belt and tensoner on monday.

The easy way to find what is making the sound is to use a mechanics stethoscope.
If it were me I would want to know where the problem is before taking it apart. If it's not the water pump, alternator, power steering pump or a/c compresssor you can take off the timing belt cover and check the timing belt pullys.

Of course a mechanic says your water pump is about to go. Then he gets to replace your timing belt w/ low miles and that belt tensioner that "always fails" (yet never does in real life) in the process.

I don't see how a water pump can make a loud noise even when breaking apart. I'd check the tension of the belts initially before doing anything else. Do you know how to do this?

theres a guy who comes into my work alot and he is a ase tech for toyota, and itold him about the noise, and he told me to bring it by his house because he wanted to check it with a stethoscope. after he checked it he said it just sounds like the tensioner, dut he said change the water pump and timing belt for safty. o yea has anyone over heated there car because they were going 120 mph on the freeway? i did 2 day it sucked

Check your crankshaft pulley. See if it's wobbling and/or if it's starting to dig into your timing belt cover. When the harmonic balancer goes bad, it'll sound like that because it's scraping against the timing belt cover. Mine just went out a few days ago. It's not hard to replace, we did it in about 20 minutes on the side of the road (don't drive the car anymore if that's the problem, it WILL get worse and do more damage).

actualy i did not loose that much coolant, it just came out of that over flow tube. some guy named brandon pulled over and helped me out he said he was a fellowe dsmer i wonder if hes on here? good guy! eclipsegsx1736: noi dont think that is it i took the cover off when it was first making the noise, and it did not change anything the sound is coming lower than that. im buying a new timing belt and tensioner and water pump tomorrow from dsmparts .com and getting them installed as soon as they come in!!!!! did i make a mistake on buying an eclipse gsx wit 90k on it for 4k or is that not that bad ? the paint is still shines like it just came off the lot and the inside is beyond perfect condtion. it was some old guy that had it. thanks alot guys

Just to confirm, the crank pulley is actually positioned very low in the car. I'm talking about the lower timing belt cover, not the upper one that you can see from the engine bay. The crank pulley is quite low and almost directly behind the driver-front wheel, behind a splash guard.

o, no i have not checked that out yet, i will for sure thanks for clearing that up or else i would have never checked it. well my water pump, timing belt and tensioner will be here in a couple of days i will let u guys no whats up after the install. thanks alot for all the help

To see if it's your water pump simply remove the accessory belt. If you still hear it it could be either a tensioner pully, idler pulley or Crank pulley. Either way if it's any of those you to re-do the timing...

For future reference, when you take the car in for work, don't tell them to "change the timing belt" because that's all they are going to do. Tell them to do maintance on the "timing assembly." And make sure they under stand to replace all components to INCLUDE the water pump.

def. i was driving on the freeway the other night with my girlfriend when heard a kind of flapping noise under the car and smelled burning rubber. so when i got home i looked under the car and there was half of the belt that goes around the alternator hanging down and the rest of it had shifted to the left . so i took it to speedee were i took it for the tune up and the guy took off the belt and my crank shaft pulley was completey loose because the head of one of the bolts had snapped off. we called around looking for the part, no one had it. we ended up going to the pick n pull and ended up getting one off another car for $30. the guys at speedee put it on and problem solved. no more noise. thanks alot for all the help much appreciated

ok so i just over heated my car again, i was pushing it hard i was racing an evo and got up to 130 and the damn thing over heated will this prob. go away when i get my water pump replaced? and would an inter cooler help out alot, thanks

well don't you use common sence? if your cars not running right and over heating why are you racing? if i were you i wouldnt even drive the car. if you keep over heating the car you'll blow your headgasket if you hadn't already if your replacing your waterpump change the timing belt blanace shaft belt if you have balance shafts and your tensior.

You need to check your cooling system. I'm sure your fans are turning on and your thermostat is opening since you probably drove a couple days b4 it overheated again. I would say you're losing coolant. It could be something as simple as your car having a faulty radiator cap. Or it could very well be the pump. Check around the engine bay and under for leaks. You know where the lines and hose that carry water run. Definitely no heavy driving.

Oh, if you do have a bad radiator cap it will, a lot of the time, not show signs of leaking water. The water you lose through there will be in the form of steam.

talon187: it was one of those moments were i just had to race him because he was being a dick i know i shouldnt have raced nor did i plane on running that hard. i have my water pump timimg belt and tentioner coming in some time to day, when i got the crank pully replaced it stoped all the noise so i thought it was fixed but i guess its not so im going to drop off the car tomorrow to get all that installed if it comes in today. it doesnt over heat when driving normally it couldnt run better its just when running hard.

Tko: yes the fans are working fine, when coolant does leak out it comes from the over flow tube and thats it, levels are good to , and theres never been any steamcoming from my car. so after i get all the parts that i orderd in should i run it and c what happens or what. thanks alot for the help

Well, obviously if you got to 130 racing an EVO, you were doing it on the streets. This site does not condone street racing, neither do I, in fact I despise it. so I will no longer assist you in repairing your car. Hopefully you car will over heat and destroy itself before you end up killing someone (or yourself) street racing.

So your car is overheating, bolts are snapping, belts are rubbing and you have some "noise" and you are getting the car up to 120 and 130 on separate occasions?

L2RTSiAWD: like i said i got every thing fixed so i was told every thing is perfect, the car ran better than ever after getting the crank pully done, the crank pully was the problem because there was only three bolts holding it in as it split into 2. i will be the first to addmit that going a 120 when i had no idea what was wrong wit the car was stupid!!! but i had some personal issues going on on easter with the gf and family so i had to bust my ass to get the house 22 miles away in like 5 to 10 min the car did not matter to me at that point well for one i did not no it was going to over heat, 2 i had somthing more importent to deal with

laserspeeddemon : yes i was doing it on the streets, its not like i go out looking for cars to race it was just one of those guys who just talks a bunch of crap about your car and every time he drives by blowing his blow BOV in your ear every one has their breaking point and he made me reach that point. that was prob . my first time racing on the streets in like 6 months, y totally agree wit u on street racing being stupid why would i want to put all my money into a car and gett it taken away that was actually the first time i ever raced on the freeway by the way, when i used to race outside a track, we would go out to the back country and do it were there were no house no other cars around nothing. so i take it u never unleashed your car on the freeway or some street? im not trying to say that its a good thing just wondering. well anyways i still appreciate your help thanks

Me and my friends did our share of street racing, someone died because of it. Thus my strong feelings against it. I don't care the situation, if I'm late for work, if I'm mad, if someone is yelling at me and throwing McDonalds cups at my car because the think I cut them off. Whatever. I don't drive recklessly, because you never know whats around the next turn (Don't be stupid and say we race and straight streets, the statement is figurative).

In the Army we have a saying: "Every private has an excuse"

so your saying if some one in your family was in the hospital and theres a realy good chance this is the last time u might get to c them, because surgery did not go to plane u wouldnt bust myy ass to see them let me no your speed limit when u get phone call like i did. i totally understand the whole racing on the street part im not a street racer, im on your side with that, like i said when i used to race it would be in the back country, i said that because i did want u think i running through traffic making people slam on their brakes, im not trying to make excuses, because excuses are like assholes every one has one. my friend also crashed racing , smashed his car to all hell broke three ribs and arm, i no the dangers, thats y i dont do it, it was just that one time, yes i no it takes just one time, well any ways i still do very much appreciate all the help u gave me

If someone I know was dying and this would be the last time I would ever see them, I would call for a police escort (and yes they do that kinda thing). They can get me there faster and safer. Me getting into an accident is not gonna help, me getting a ticket is not gonna help. In fact, it may result in me ending up in the hospital.

This is always a better means then flying down the street recklessly.

thats is also a great option, that never crossed my mind at that time. never actually realized that was an option!!! ill keep that in mine because your right i ticket would make things even slower, and winding up in the hospital is no a good option . to continue on about my car i oderd the timing belt 4 peice set and water pump, from dsmparts.com and paid 3 day select on the 9th and finally got my shipment on the 17th, so that sucked and i open the box and theres no water pump and timing belt tensioner, so now i got to wait who knows how long to get those parts in, i was told it takes about 5-6 hours for a shop to install at 100 $ an hour, is that a bad price?

I think thats alittle high for 500-600 i could get a headgasket it done and do a metal one. id say the going rate is about 400. did you get a mitsu tensior or water pump? reason i ask this is because the misu water pump has a like a fan blade on it that makes it turn and the one i got didnt it had like some round think with no fans on it. my friend told he had used one like the one i got and when he beat on it hard he over heated the car. as for the tensior i had done all my timing stuff on my 2.0 non turbo my frist talon. same motor as the turbo car and i used one from the part store and it failed in less then 5k miles. i know oem stuff is high price but there are certain things id say you should keep oem. second if your not doing it yourself why not spend alittle more and know its not going to fail. also if i were you id eaither do a compression test or have the shop doing your work do one and see what it says. do you have balance shafts? the reason i ask this is becuase on my current talon i had them fail and had the bearing go threw my bottom end and desotry the motor. to take them out you need to take all the timing stuff off so its just a thought well good luck.
