Anybody have a solid suggestion or experience with their auto tranny downshifting to neutral on WOT? I'm running a pure stock '95 AWD. If I ease into the throttle it downshifts to 2nd and rolls you back in the seat. If I stab the throttle, it (sometimes) acts as if it misses 2nd and hangs out in neutral for a few seconds prior to shifting back into D.
Thanks guys

That happened in my brothers neon. If he kicked it the shift lever went to N. Even if he started out in lower gear it would shoot to N if he stepped on the pedal. The tranny is probly going to go soon. I guess some trannys mess with you before they leave you stranded on a highway in the middle of the night calling your older brother for help. LoL

Have you checked your transmission fluid level? Could be something as simple as low fluid level. It could also be a stopped up filter that is providing only enough fluid during low demand situations but under a high low the pump volume needed just isn't there due to blockage and thus the trans starves for fluid and slips.

OR... it could be like everyone else is saying. The auto trans has multiple clutch packs in it instead of a single clutch and if there's enough of them worn then you could have the condition you are speaking of. Try asking transdude on here or possibly a member on CarolinaDSM.com. It's possible you might find someone who can help you locally there.

Thanks for input guys. I really do appreciate it. I just changed the fluid and filter in the tranny about two weeks ago and there was no evidence of impending failure on the mag. I'm having a really hard time beleiving that the tranny is going out. It pulls so strong when it does downshift properly. The shifter itself does not move or anything so I know it's not linkage.

Well, you have the car. The next best thing to the internet crystal ball diagnostic approach is to take it to someone who has some experience with transmissions whether it be someone in a car club or a professional mechanic.
