There is oil all over my oil filter housing and the very bottom of my alternator. Is there a gasket or something there that could have blown?

could be a gasket right near the block. i had the luck of 3 going on me the first month i had the car. funnnn:beatentodeath:
gave me oil in the same areas, but also in my rim and on my brakes no the drivers side. probably have one of those three gaskets blown, can't remember which ones they were thou sorry.

There is an orange o-ring between the oil cooler and filter housing that will crack and leak over time. I dont have a part # right now but maybe someone with caps can give you a part #. If not, you can go to the dealer and they can find it for you. I have ordered them before and it seems to be a fairly common replacement part.

if that orange gasket goes out, could it create a catastrophic failure? as in oil pouring out of the engine like the oil filter wasn't even on? or create a wobble in the oil filter where you can actually move the oil filter with your hand? I haven't actually looked at the problem closely yet, my brother is picking the car up tonight, but I wanted to get all my investigation down today so I go into it with knowledge of the problem......

If I may add my 2 cents. I was at the track the other day (MIR) and after hot lapping a couple passes (6) I started blowing oil real bad, by the end of the track i had almost no oil pressure. Looked under the car and found oil all over the filter, housing, cooler, basically the whole driver side area. I checked the filter and it was pretty loose, so i tightened it on hand tight, and turned the car back on and it still leaked so i immediately shut it off. Had a friend go get me some more 5-30 and i pulled off the filter entirely, and guess what, the bolt came with it. Seperated the two and put the bolt back in nice and tight using a wrench and put the filter back on. After refilling it with oil again everything was perfect, pressure was back, oil level was fine.

SHORT VERSION>
-Bolt holding the filter to the housing stuck to the filter, try taking off your filter and tightening the bolt down to the housing hand tight plus a quarter turn and put the filter back on. If that doesnt do it, the orange o-ring is probably your problem, followed by the worst case, a cracked cooler.
