I posted a thread a little while ago about my overheating problem. The car was getting really hot while I was going down the road, it was making a buzzing sound only when the car was moving (which got increasingly louder), and it kept stalling out as I slowed down. I was told it was either the thermostat, radiator, water pump, or restriction in the front of the radiator. The only thing I can figure was making the noise is the fan. We hot wired the fan directly to the battery to see if it worked, which it did. Then we tested it like the haynes manual said to do, and all it did was make a clicking sound. What could be wrong? I'm also thinking that if there was something wrong with the water pump, that could cause the belts to be off or something causing it to stall out. Would the water pump or the belts make a buzzing sound?

bad waterpump bearings will make a whining noise or the manual gives another descriptive word which i don't remember. if you take off the accesory belts and turn the pulleies on the water pump you will hear and feel if it is bad. it will make that whining noise and also my feel ruff to turn or you will be able to feel freeplay when pulling on the pullies. you can also check the other accesory bearings in the same way. the only other thing that can go wrong on the water pump is the seal leaking. i wouldn't expect this to make noises or cause other problems like that though.

The car has been sitting for a couple of weeks. My dad started it up today and I guess some warning lights came on in the dash, and when he revved it up a little bit, I guess the alternator belt started smoking really bad. The smoke was so bad, it was coming out of the hood, so something is definitely seized up. We were going to take it somewhere to have it fixed, but now it's looking like we have to do it ourselves. Pretty sure it's the water pump, since it was overheating, so I went out and got a new water pump today with new belts. Any tips on changing it?

water pumps are no fun to change, just make sure you follow your haynes manual to the T, is your talon a 1.8 or 2.0 motor? 2.0 water pumps can be a pain, especally when it comes to setting the timeing, you need a special tool to move the tensoner that most automotive shops dont sell, you'll either have to go to the mitsubishi dealer or check ebay theres usally a few on there. i dont know if the 1.8 needs that tool though, good luck!!

Hmm... well, if the dash lights came on, and the alternator belt was smoking, did anyone bother looking at it to see if it was turning??

Also, if the fan worked when hooked to 12v, but not when on the harness, I would check the fan relays.

Good luck.
