hit a deer,no tail lites

hit a deer last nite but got lucky and only broke the right front marker lite and now I have no dash lites and no tail lites.when the marker lite broke,two wires were pulled from the lite socket and were left bare so I think the wires arched and blew a fuse but all fuses ckeck out good.how do you test the tail lite relay? any Ideas? (91 tsi)

On your 91 tsi, it looks like everything parking lite/tail lite/instrument panel illumination related is on one power circuit.

Before getting too carried away, we should definately isolate the two spranglified wires from each other, and the chassis. Just give them a quicky wrap with electrical tape for now.

Main power comes from sub fusible link #7. It also feeds the headlights, and you didn't say they were out, so for now we'll assume we have power on #7 into the fuse block.

Inside the car, fuse #1 is the dedicated park lite fuse, red 10 amp. You said you tested it, but you didn't say how. It should be live 24/7. Put your electrical tester on both the little test points, one at a time. Both live? Let's move on.

The tail lite relay is the same as several other relays in the underhood fuse block. ( It's the outer relay in the front row) Try swapping it with a neighbor of the same part number.

After doing that, we'll know where we're at and can proceed, if necessary.
