Well, after having all my valves replaced, new seals, and a multi layer head gasket installed back in November I figured my car was good to go as far as maintenance. About 1000 miles of driving after getting her back I noticed my oil light was flickering on and off and my dipstick was dry as a desert. I decided to head down to my local auto store and pick up 3 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic (what i've been using for all of my oil changes) to add. Well, it ran fine for about 300 miles. Then, on Christmas Eve while I was doing normal around town at 30mph driving I pushed the clutch down to change gears and the rpm's dropped to 0 and the car died. I coasted into a spot and started her up again. Now, before I started on my trip I noticed the car had a very low idle on startup but other than that everything was fine. The car would go into gear and when I would try to get her moving it would die. I left her in the spot and walked it home  The next day I went back and noticed after starting up the car a very loud knocking noise that got louder with an increase in rpm's. I had it AAA'd to my house. A week later I had my mechanic look at it and gave me the bad news. Apparently, he never has used synthetic on my car (which I though he told me he did) and told me that the mix of regular oil that was in my car from the head rebuild and the synthetic I had put in earlier had caused the block to go bad. Now, is this the real reason or is he hiding something from me? He had done my 6 bolt swap back in June. I did a search on mixing the 2 different oils and had come up with the opposite of what I was told. I really am in a bind here and have the car for sale. I'm debating fixing it but after all the shit luck I've had i really don't want to deal with it again. Sorry for the long post but i just need some real answers and opinions on what I could do? Thanx for all the help - Blaine

Sounds like rod knock, although I dunno if mixing the two oils would have been the cause so late in the game. I would suspect an assembly or engine break-in error. Who built the motor?

The motor isn't built or anything. It was just a used 6 bolt with "40,000 miles" but thats what everyone says so I really dont know. As far as break-in, i asked my mechanic after my head rebuild and he said take it easy for 500 miles, which I did. So I don't know about that.

mixing the two oils together would not cause the motor to die. Something else caused it.

Is there any way I can prove this to him? Also, anybody have any ideas of what did cause it to die?

Are you sure the motor had only 40,000 miles, and did you see if you had a oil leak anywhere that would cause it to be bone dry on the dipstick.

Im not sure the motor only had that many miles, thats only what I was told. The car never leaked oil at all.
