Well, my car is making a horrible noise and I have searched through the forums. As it turns out I believe my next course of action will be to drop the oil pan and check for signs of a spun rod bearing :barf: . The question I have is that while I am there with the oil pan off, what other components should I check for signs of wear or what would be a good idea to replace?

Thanks for the space, Dan.

Be sure to check the oil pan for dents if you do find a spun bearing. Also check the oil pickup for gunk or blockages. Check the oil lines for leaks and rust. How was the oil pressure before the trouble started? If it was already low it could have been a sign of worn bearings or a failing oil pump. One more thing as long as you going to remove the oil pan check it for bad rust. I have seen numerous oil pans with very bad rust spots on DSMs.

Once you get the oil pan off you'll want to check the strainer like DSMGSX mentioned. You'll also want to pull off a main bearing cap and at least one rod bearing cap and check it for signs of oil starvation. If I see a picture of it then I'll be able to tell you if the bearings have starved for oil but a description just would do you much good. Most of the time though you will see a more mirror like finish on bearings with damage but a picture is really best.

Also, if you're pulling the oil pan the you should pull the valve cover as well. From there you can pull off several camshaft caps and check them the same way. Pictures again here would really help. Or you can just get one of us from CarolinaDSM to swing by and look at the stuff while you have it off.

Thanks for the offer; I am dying to get her running right again. I believe I remember you from a while back from Carolina DSM. Did you run any autox events with THSCC? Anyways, I am going to drop it tomorrow after work and see what I am dealing with. I will take some pictures and post my findings.

Well I finally got to it. While I am happy to find the problem, I am also a bit down about it because I have an idea of what is involved to fix it and it is more than I can handle in my driveway. Here is what I found in my oil pan this morning.....

Ohh I dont know. I guess if it were important then it would not have broke. Seems like all the wear just adds character.
Right?? ;)

But seriously, I have been racking my brain trying to figure the cost of parts that will be needed. If anyone has gone through this before and has a list of all parts needed to fix this mess please post them here. A new crankshaft and bearings will definitely be in order. By the way if you know a good site to get an OEM crankshaft, please feel free to share the info.

OK. So I am down to a stroker kit or just buying a shortblock. I am scouting out all possibilities. I have used search, however would going with the stroker kit which would include shop time to have the block rebuilt, balanced, etc.. save any money over buying say a Buschur short block. I am not looking to have a 10 second street car  but I would like at least 12's someday. My most important issue is to have a fairly reliable DSM but while having to replace such major parts, why not add some power. While doing some searching, I have found claims to what certain vendors provide but have not seen any first hand feedback from anyone who has bought and ran a short block ( ie... any issues with / after installation or further down the road ). Whichever set-up I choose will be run with the 14b and stock head at least for now. Thanks in advance for any help or info you provide.
