Starts off only when I start my car in the morning, or after it has sat for a while.
Originally I thought it was coming from the turbo, but I opened the hood up today and remote started the car. Revved it up a little and it sounded like it was coming from behind the turbo in the block. Almost sounded like a bad exhaust leak with a knocking sound.
After a minute of that sound it quieted down to just a ticking/knocking. I dont believe its Lifter tick because its louder towards the bottom of the block.

It only does this until I drive the car about 50 yards then it stops.

Like I said I originally thought it was the turbo, because my car felt horribly slugish while the noise was going on. Also as soon as the noise stopped my turbo would then sound normal.

My thoughts are . . . throw out bearing, balance shaft or lack of oil in my killer big T28.

Throw your opinions at me of what it could be so I can check them out.

Thanks in advance !

Just wanted to add that I have a oil leak coming from the oil drain line off my turbo.
My SS line comes in tomorrow.

I dont believe that would mess with the oil going to the turbo, but thats why I'm asking.

It could be a lack of oil....not just in the turbo, motors sound bad when they have no oil. If its the throw out bearing the sound will be constant unless you press your clutch pedal in then that sound will go away. if your sayin your balance shaft being off center.....that is more of a wobling sound and you get a bad engine vibration. as for sounding like an exhaust leak check your downpipe o2 housing and al the other exahust conections. especially wfere your tubo meets the manifold and maifold mets head. exhaust could escpae through there and you could get little to no boost.

Thats just the thing, its confusing to me. Because once the car warms up a little bit the noise turns just into a little ticking noise.

Keep in mind, I have an Automatic GST

What I would do would be to make sure you don't have any clogged oil passages. If you have an exhaust leak it's normal for it to be much louder when the car is cold. Especially if it's a small leak at a gasket. Once the metal warms up, it expands, along with the gasket, effectively sealing most of the leak off.

The knocking, could be bad oil (broken down viscosity), not enough oil (dieing oil pump, clogged oil passage, etc.)

Yea, I'm going to change my oil when the SS return line gets here.

The oil did look a little thin. I hope its just a gasket leak and the exh. Manifold !

What would make oil thin out like that though?

Oil can lose its viscosity over time from a number of things...

The primary enemy being un-burnt fuel escaping the combustion chamber and into the crankcase....

Exactly.
The harmonic balancer as Defiant stated will also give you a knocking noise if it's bad. You're just checking it to see if it's seperating from the crank pully. If it does seperate, you'll probably have to replace some valves at a mimimum.

Ok, well I started my car this morning about 5 mins before I left to warm it up to see if it would make a difference. When I went to drive off the noise was not there at all.

If it was the harmonic bal. wouldnt it be there all the time no matter if I let it sit for a few mins or not?

FYI O2 sensor went out this morning...

The sound is there all the time.... just not as loud....

Yea... I meant from in my car I couldnt hear it at all after letting it sit before I drove.
Ok, I got CEL's.... one is P0170 & P0400
P0400 is because my egr is blocked off I believe.

But no-one seems to know 100% sure what P0170 is. ( I searched )
Some are saying its from Exhaust Manifold leak.... Others saying 02 sensor.
On my A/F gauge the lights are not moving back and forth which I thought meant my 02 sensor is not cycling.

Yea most likely it finally went bad. So this weekend I'm removing my block off plate to my egr and just gonna run it like normal. Also will change out the 02 sensor and probably take off my manifold and put my new gasket I have it and see if thats not the noise i hear.

I really don't think thats the noise, I've heard an exhaust leak before and it don't sound like that. But its worth a shot.

It would make sense though for it to be a leak, since metal expands when it gets hot and would seal the leak. 4G63 7-bolt = leaks, noise, & crankwalk. Hurray Hurray !:p

So much for unblocking my egr. I just installed a 1g JDM throttle body that has only 1 port. I don't think I can run my egr of that port.... or can I ?

But I will change the gasket to my manifold, change my Oil feedline and Update this when thats done. Hopefully its an exhaust leak, that would be good, but I doubt it.

People have found that plugging in all the emission related electronics on the firewalls will sometimes help prevent the EGR system from throwing a code... if you haven't tried it yet.

Yea I have the connections plugged in still, and holes plugged.

Does the EGR bypass itself in WOT or does its specific throttle body port do the bypassing.
Because, if it bypasses itself during WOT I could plug it in to the one port.

But my main concern is this awful noise... I'm gonna fully inspect everything this weekend.
