What's the problem?

Well I recently traded my AE86 for a new toy. Shehan's old Laser RS-T. Well yeah, I'm having minor issues with it. When driving it will run great and boost great up unitl about 5k rpm and then it starts spitting and sputtering and the boost jumps all over and it slows down like you hit a wall. Well at first I thought it might be because of the open loop bov Jake had on it. Well, I made a recirc hose.....nothing, all that did is make it quieter. I tried running it on 8psi, 12 psi and 19psi(what is was at when i got it) Does the same no matter what the boost. The only mods to the car are ACT clutch and flywheel, 3" turbo back exhaust, cone filter, mbc and a Greddy Type S. It is also smoking pretty bad all the time, a whiteish blueish smoke, smokes even more so under a load. So what are some things it could be? Any help is appreciated.

Do a boost leak test.
Change the spark plugs and gap them correctly.
Run a compression test. Dry and Wet
Pull off the LICP and check for oil pooling up - bad turbo seal

Iv got a 92 awd turbo laser and when driving at 5k i got a bad spit and spudder to so i went and bought plug and wired gapped plugs at .28 and it runs like a champ no spittin and sputterin at all

Ugh, now it seems to have developed a slight knock or tick. I knew I should have never got a DSM.

Check your timing. Make sure you're not due for an oil change.

Well, fixed the 5k problem. The noise is in the head......so my guess is that it's a lifter probably. Anything I can do to subdue that lifter noise?

Put a can of Restorer in the oil (Walmart has it). Works wonders for lifter noise - even the geru Defiant himself blesses this stuff. Eliminated my lifter noise.

Yeah, I've never had to try that, but I've heard it works.
