Ok, I just bought a '96 TSi AWD. Since I got the car, the ABS light has been on. On the thruway, I've been hearing either road noise or my engine (not sure b/c this is my first 5 spd and it gets quieter once I let off the gas). The only thing I can think of is the wheels bearings. Well, my first question is: what do you guys think? and my second is: are my wheel bearing one assembly with the hub?(if so, will I be okay driving for a few days until I can get it in the shop?). Any help would be much appreciated.

If it was a wheel bearing it would be very noticable, it probally would have seized up on the highway if it was bad. If it was a wheel bearing it would be a noticable low growl or high pitched squeal. But since you have the ABS light on its most likley a bad wheel speed sensor. 90% of the time thats why the ABS light is on.

How to read 2g ABS diagnostic trouble code using ABS warning light (these codes are different than the engine trouble codes):

The ’99 Mitsubishi Eclipse manual says you can ground pin 1 (upper left) of the data link connector and count the flashes of the ABS warning light. First longer flashes (1.5 sec each) are the tens digit followed by a 2 sec pause followed by shorter flashes (0.5 sec each) for the ones digit. For example a 24 code will have 2 longer flashes, pause, 4 shorter flashes. No trouble codes will flash continuous shorter pulses. Tell me the code and I'll tell you what it means (it will tell which wheel and what component).

is that something I need to get taken car of right away? obviously if it needs to be done, I need to have it done, but if I can hold off for like a week, that would be a lot better...my shop has a little bit of a waiting list at the moment

You can hold off as long as you want your brakes will still work just fine. When there is a fault in the ABS system, the ABS just turns itself off and reverts back to standard non anti-lock brakes. Just rember that as long as the ABS light is on ABS is not available. :thumb:

oic...thanks for the good news...I'll make sure to get it fixed soon...winter is coming and I live in a suburb of Buffalo NY...that abs might come in handy...

Yeah it might come in handy up there for the winter. Just so you know how critical it is my parents live in Mass and have been driving around with their ABS light on for the last 2 years because they don't have the money to fix it, and the stops just fine.

This all assumes that the ABS light and the noise are related, I am not convinced.

Can you describe the sound?

Can you change the title of your post so it reflects the nature of the subject body? Makes it easier for people that search, also people that know the answer will click on it and help you maybe.

there's not much of a sound, but it's somewhat of a howling...the only reason I'm unsure of it being the wheel bearings or anything is because I'm not used to the sound of my motor in 5th gear, but when I let off the gas, the sound kinda fades away...
