ALRIGHT I HAVE A PROBLEM HERE. i JUST PURCHASED A 91 TALON TSI AWD. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC AND I HAVENT HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH AUTO DSMS BEFORE. THE CAR HAD A BAD TURBO SO I REPLACED IT WITH A E316G AND A 2G MANIFOLD. I ONLY USED THESE PARTS BECASUE I HAD THEM AT MY DISPOSAL. I ALSO DID A FULL TUNEUP ON THE CAR WHEN I GOT IT. MY PROBLEM IS THAT THE CAR IS SUPER SLOW. THE TURBO DOESNT HIT FULL BOOST TIL' ABOUT 45OO AND IT TAKES ME FOREVER TO GET THERE. WHEN I TAKE OFF IM SURE A GEO COULD TAKE ME OFF THE LINE. IT FEELS LIKE THERES NO POWER DOWN LOW AND WHEN I GET TO HIGH RPMS (AROUND FULL BOOST) THE CAR STUDDERS AND LOSES POWER. IM NOT SURE HOW AUTOS ARE SUPPOSED TO ACT BUT I SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE SOME POWER UP TOP WITH THIS TURBO. I KNOW I AM SUPPOSED TO DO FUEL MODS AND ALL THAT BUT I HAVENT BUMPED THE BOOST UP AT ALL AND IM REALLY ONLY USING IT AS A DAILY DRIVER RIGHT NOW. IM NOT DRIVING IT FAST CAUSE IM SURE THE A/F MIXTURE IS NO GOOD. I AM GOING TO PUT SOME 510CC INJECTORS ON IT TOMORROW AND SEE IF IT WILL HELP WITH ME GETTTING A LITTLE MORE FUEL IN THERE. BUT WHY THE LACK OF POWER? IM GONNA DO A LEAK TEST TO SEE IF IM HOLDING BOOST BUT WOULD THAT CAUSE A LOSS OF POWER LIKE THIS. SHOULDNT AN AWD 1ST GEN BE DECENTLY FAST STOCK EVEN IF ITS AUTO. I MEAN WOW, I AM REALLY DISSAPOINTED. AND DONT WORRY ALL THE SUPPORTING MODS ARE TO COME SOON. I JUST NEEDED TO GET THE CAR DRIVEABLE FOR RIGHT NOW AND THATS WHY I DID THE EVO 3 AND 2G MANI... :talon:

Lets start by not typing in "ALL CAPS". :D

1. How did it run before you started working on it?
2. What was bad with the stock turbo? Oil seal/pieces missing inside the housing/etc.
3. Have you done a compression check?
4. Have you done a boost leak test?
5. What kind of "tune up" did you do? Plugs/plug wires/oil/etc
6. What parts(brand, etc) did you use in the tune up?
7. Do you have any kind of data logger
9. Boost guage and what's it running at?
10. DO NOT add any more parts until you've figure out whats wrong with the car.

Good luck

I agree especially with the bold.

What is your vacuum reading at idle?

Vaccum is at close to 14hg at idle. When I bought the car the guy told me that the exhaust mani gasket was bad and thats why it had no power. Well i kind of figured that he wouldnt sell the car for so cheap if it was just the gasket so I kind of knew that I was in for some work. When I drove it home it seemed to idle good, no knock, wasnt leaking fluids, but did have no power. When i took the turbo and manifold off I found a huge crack running from the top of the exaust side of the turbo all the way down to the 02 housing. So thats why I changed the turbo also. When I tuned it up I put a standard frahm air filter some msd wires and ngk spark plugs. Changed the oil with mobil 1 and the tranny fiilter with mobil 1 fluids also. It had a miss when I first put it all back together but I adjusted the idle and it seemed to go away. When I get to full boost the car hesitates and loses power. I am going to perform some tests on it tomorrow and see what results i get. I havent got a logger for the car yet because i just got it. I have DSMLink on my 2nd gen so I had to need for a logger. Ill go through your list and perform all of the above mentioned and post some results as soon as i get them. so thanks for the advice

P.S. sorry for the caps thing.... i didnt realize how bad that annoyed people on here... I dont normally type in caps either, kind of a coincidence I guess. :thumb: :talon:

Your car should run like a mofo, auto or not, If I was in your shoes, I would build a boost leak tester and check for boost leaks, boost leaks are very common and can really jack our cars up. If you have good engine compression, no water in the oil, white smoke out the exhaust(blown head gasket), and no knock in the engine, I am sure it will be something small, (It allways is) ;)

Thanks Bob. I really wasnt sure if auto made that much of a difference. I am gonna check for boost leaks tomorrow and see whats up. I dont have any oil in the water, white smoke or any of that. I think im good to go as far as compression so im sure it is something small like you said. I am in the market right now for the datalogger and afc ( sucks to go to this after using DSMLink on my 2nd gen) so as soon as i get that i will feel a little safer with what I am doing. Hopefully when I get the problem solved I wont be dissapointed, especially with a evo3 on it. Ill post and let you guys know what the problem was as soon as I figure it out. fin... :talon:

BTW I am running stock boost on the car because I havent got an aftermarket boost guage yet. Like he said above I dont want to add anything else until I solve my problems. Dont know if that makes a difference but I thought I would post it anyways.. :talon:

14 kHG at idle indicates a boost leak. Unless the altitude at which your at normally runs 14. Boost leak test it baby!! Or buy my car.... which ever.

What are your plugs gapped at and are they NGK bpr6es?

O.K. well one of the problems I was having was a boost leak. The previous owner got hit on the passenger side and it dented the intercooler. Well he said it had a hole and he JB welded it. What a horrible job he did. I took off the old JB weld and theres a hole in the intercooler the size of a damn silver dollar. I tried to JB weld it back together just temporarily and it worked, the car had way more power. Unfortunately the JB weld came loose and now im back to step 1. So needless to say I am looking for a new intercooler at the moment. Anyways, I think the ignition timing was off too. I advanced it a bit and the miss seemed to go away. I still have no balls off the line though. Not sure if this is normal. It just sucks because I have awd and thats the part where im supposed to leave people is off the line. Well I think there might still be something wrong with the car but not sure yet. I got to change the T-stat tomorrow and ill mess with it some more. Until then, I just wanted to keep everyone updated. Later :talon:

BTW what is the "optimum" amount of vaccum to have at idle? not really sure on that one. :talon:

Yeah I know. I just figured since we were on the subject I would ask someone. Thanks though. :talon:

It is going to be slow off the line, especially with a boost leak. Only way to be fast off the line is to stall it up and build boost off line or else put a shot of nitrous on it off the line. Invest in a restalled torque converter and it will help a ton. You should be able to get some boost off the line though with the stocker with that 16g.

Thanks Glitz, I kinda figured w/o a high stall converter I was kinda screwed. Im looking into a FMIC for the car now to solve the hole in my intercooler problem. I have read that autos spool the turbos a little slower also. My e3 doesnt get full boost til' about 4500 rpms which is like almost 1k rpms slower than my fwd 2nd gen 5spd. Either way the converter will be coming soon enough cause im not gonna put up with a slow DSM. So thanks again for all the info guys. I appreciate it :talon:
