Interior Lights

I have a 97 GST and sometimes when my lights are on, the interior lights above the stereo (A/C and heater control lights) dont come on. But one day I got mad and banged on the top of the dash they came back on and now whenever they dont come on I bang on it and they magically turn on. I was wondering what could this be because I dont like beating on my car, I kinda like my car.
