Good compression but still smoking?

Ok here's the deal, my car has been smoking white for the last week/week and a half and it doesnt it constant. It still drives great and doesnt overheat at all but smokes all the time. I did a cold compression test 195-180-195-200 and a warm test 195-185-195-196. I'm not much coolant or oil that I can see so I don't know what the deal is. I'm still running the T2small and have seen people on here getting white smoke when their turbo went out but my turbo seems to boost just fine and holds psi great. Please give me any advice, thanks in advance. :thumb:

I thought standard compression on a 2g 4G63 turbo engine was 178. If that is correct it looks like your not doing your compression test right.

Assuming you have done the compression test correctly and in fact it's oil leakage, the higher compression number could be caused by carbon build up and your problem is probably valve seals or turbo seal. Have you Check the turbo for shaft play, free spin and licp/ic for oil? When I blew the seal on my 16g, it had very little shaft play and was spooling fine. The more important question after you locate the leak is WHY? Good luck.

Yea I checked the spin and play on the turbo and it was perfect none at all. But I do have oil all in my intercooler pipes so could that be the problem? Just to make sure I'm doing the compression test right I'll tell you how I did it, I may be doing it wrong :| . I unplugged the coil and all of the injectors so no fuel or spark is going into the cylinders. Then pull all the plugs and wires. Put the compression guage in, floor the throttle and crank it 7-8 times. So did I do it right or wrong? I looked at the vfaq and it said to pull the MPI fuse but do the 2gs have this fuse because I didn't see it.

That depends on whether the breather off the VC is still routed back to the intake pipe and how much oil are we talking about, dry or wet?

That sounds about right but you should have pull the mpi fuse to cut off fuel as well, however this will not effect the test results.

The MPI fuse for 2G is located in the fuse box, unlike 1G which is right off the positive terminal.

When exactly does it smoke? Taking off? Idling? Boosting?....etc. Are you sure it's pure white and not blueish white? How are the pcv and breather routed? Dipstick popping? I suggest repeating the compression test again and perform a wet test while you're at it.

The VC was routed back into the intake for the first 2 months that I had it but it is just dumping at the moment. I took off the lower and upper intercooler pipes to check for oil and there was a slight film around the edges but nothing pooling. The car smokes at idle from what I can tell because I'm not blowing out smoke out like crazy when I'm driving down the road. It blows out smoke when I'm idleing after a drive after it has warmed up. This is driving me crazy trying to figure this out, I don't want to drive it smoking incase it is a headgasket and I break it farther. The smoke that comes out seems to be white but it might be a REALY REALLY light blue but as far as I can tell it is white. I never noticed the smoke until I put the exhaust on but it may have been doing it I just couldnt see it because it was dumping underneath the car.

How about the pcv?

If you're blowing smoke during boosting or right after you let off from boosting, it's probably not the turbo seal. At this point if I have to guess, it would be valve seals or bad pcv.

the PVC is routed to the stock location but I'm not sure when it was changed last so I may pick one up from the parts store or should I turn it into a breather or something. Please help on that part. I will do another compression test when I get off of work tonight. Would the cold compression test that dropped down to 180 be a sign of a blown headgasket? that same cylinder was alittle low on the warm test too. I had drained my radiator and filled it simply with water to get it running again. maybe I will drain some more out and fill it with radiator fluid to be able to figure out what the smell is like. Should it smell sweet or bad or what? I also heard that if you put your hand over the exhaust and let it blow for awhile and then lick it it would taste sweet if it is antifreeze any truth in that?

Replace it with an OEM one, don't use a generic one because they're known to leak. If you choose to vent it or route it to a catch can, you must either hollow it out or replace it with a 1/8 npt straight fitting.

If the HG is blown, you shouldn't just be smoking during idle and usually you would have two cylinders adjacent with lower numbers, much lower than 180.

Good thats what I was wanting to hear that It might not be the headgasket because it is such a pain in the ass to change. So what exactly does the PVC valve do to make it possibly make my car smoke?

1. If the pcv is stuck closed, crankcase ventilation capacity will be greatly reduced especially if the breather is no longer routed back to the intake pipe, causing pressure to find it's way out somewhere else. In this case, possibly valve seals.

2. If the pcv is stuck open, intake pressure will leak into the crankcase pressurizing it very quickly leading to the same situation as 1.

Keep in mind that we're not there with the car, you are. All we can do is give you suggestion and lay out the possible causes, you're the one who is going to have to verify them. Good luck.

Just wanted to add that I had very similar compression numbers 180's and 190's. I am having the same problem as you. Anyways if I figure out the problem before you I will post it on here, hopefully it helps. I'll be checking it this weekend.
