My friend has a 98 GSX with some turn signal problems and I was hoping someone could help out. He was driving to work one day and the left turn signal started blinking (normal speed of blink) and would not stop. No matter where he puts the turn signal switch, only the left signal blinks. Even if he moves the switch (as if to signal a right turn) only the left turn signal blinks. My buddy has been having to ride around with no fuse to stop the left
turn signal from blinking all the time. I suggested to him that it may be the turn signal switch but I was hoping someone with more experience could help out here...

He made no modifications to the car for a while before this problem started. He has modded his side mirrors with led's that light up when he signals a turn, but this was done a while before the problem started and was working correctly for a year before this problem happened. Thanks for the help guys...

P.S. Got to go for a ride in his car last night, and I have to say that 17 psi is f'in cool...
It darn near makes me want to go get a turbo (and a 98 model). The way that his car pushes you back in the seat starting about 4k was darn impressive. Gotta love those turbo's! :dsm:

No matter what. He starts the car and his left signal starts blinking immediatly. It doesn't matter where his turn signal switch is located, it's ALWAYS on a left turn?

Shorted control. the acc. wire for his left turn signal is shorted against a constant 12 volt source. Meaning, his acc. (accessory) wire, or switch wire will have constant power supplied to it at all times. Simply trace the wires until you find out where it is touching another wire and you should find your culprut. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Post back and let us know what you find.

Exactly, It's ALWAYS on a left turn. He has been driving it without a fuse to keep it from blinking all the time. :toobad:

He did open up his steering column cover (where it covers the switch) and the switch 'appeared' to be a solid, plug in type part. There did not really seem to be any wires or anything that may come loose. I wanted to ask around on here before we started messing with the switch itself and possibly caused more problems. I was thinking that maybe someone else had experienced the same symtoms with their car? (I swear I tried searing...)

We will take your advice (I appreciate your input) and give the switch a real good look this time. I hope if its the switch that it is not expensive. The guy works 2 jobs just so he can afford a nice car and a bazillion dollar switch is going to hurt him... May even cut into his 'mod' money.

FWIW: Darn that turbo felt cool... :rocks: I just had to mention again, Guy has me bad thinking turbo DSM now. Maybe when I finish payin GM for the Camaro, Ill just have to get me a new Mitsubishi to play with! :sneaky:

Did you ever fix the turn signal problem you were having on your dsm? Just tonight I was coming home from work, made a hard right and when I straightened up, I noticed that my driver side turn signal kept on blinking no matter what position the stalk was in. Both lights flash when the harzards are on but other than that, that one just keeps on flashing. Let me know what you did.

Thanks

M

Okay, now there were two people with the same problem and neither posted the update so I will ask.

Did either of you get this fixed? Apparently the relay is expensive and I'm concerned that I buy it, install it and that won't be it. Any hehlp would be appreicated!

I just replaced my stalk/switch and it worked fine. There must of been a little peice that broke off from in the inside.

Thanks for your help guys. I had a couple more questions too.

Did you have to remove the steering wheel? Is the switch difficult to replace?

Call the dealer and they have one for $109. Also did a used parts search and they range anywhere from $40 to $90.

First, you need to get the turn signal switch. The switch has a lot of plastic pieces in it and one of my plastic pieces broke. I just wanted it replaced so I went to the dealer and bought the switch. I have an RS and apparently there is a difference in switches is you have cruise control or not.

TO replace the switch you have to remove the steering wheel.

1st: Take off the negative battery cable and let sit. I let mine sit for a half hour. That will discharge the caps in the airbag.
2nd: Removed three Phillips screws on bottom of steering column to remove plastic cover.

3. Removed four 10mm bolts from behind the steering wheel, air bag popped off.

4. Removed one harness connection and one purple plug in connection from airbag.

5. Needed breaker bar and WD40; removed center 17mm bolt. It would be helpful to have a deep 17mm socket here. The center steering wheel bolt has A LOT of teeth. I marked the position of the wheel on the bolt with a sharpie to insure I put it back on the right teeth.

6. Removed four screws for clock spring, but did not remove clock spring, I only let it come forward an inch. (when putting this back together, the clock spring has two arrows that need to line up).

7. Removed the two screws holding the switch and unplugged the two harnesses in the switch.

8. Installed new switch and and harnesses and then put everything back together. It was not as difficult as it would appear. My biggest issue was the 17mm sterring wheel bolt. When you try to turn it, the wheel moves. I have pictures, but I've been lazy. I will try to do a write up this week.

If you checked the switch and it was fine...you may wanna take a look at your flasher unit....it is located on the right side behind the radio... its a small black box it has a screw on top of it....

Back from the dead, my little brothers Gst is having issues similar to previous posts. Park lights work perfect all around, the right turn signal works perfect all the bulbs while lights are on. But! The left side (diver side) doesn't not blink at all for the front and the tail light only the inner light blinks (closer to the mid section cover) also noticed that the brake light only works on that same bulb.. we replaced all bulbs all around and still same results.. please help, not a fan of wiring and lights haha.. thanks in advance :hellyeah:
