Ok about a week ago i was in walmart parking lot and herd a clackin ticking noise almost kinda like lifter tick but louder and a more pronounced tick more of a clack and it has came and gone sience just not nearly as loud as the first time. well tonight after dropping my friend off im driving back and i get the sound again except this time it is louder than ever. it goes away at about 2000ish rpm tho so i was trying to coast as much as possible so for about 5 min it is clacking and then it stops completly goes awa again before i didnt think much of it but now im worried and need soem advice only things i could possibly think of is that its a lifter biting the big one or something to do with the timing belt bearings it seems to be coming from the t-belt side but i didnt get to check it tonight cuz it stopped b4 i got home. it seems o be the t-belt side but not over the t-belt more over the cams and lifters. power seems to be he same thought so i dont know any help would be great. :laser:

"Timing belt bearings"? I dunno where you heard that one, but there's no such thing.

Do you hear the knocking at idle? Does it become more pronounced w/acceleration? Sounds like a rod bearing went to me. Start the car on 3 cylinders (unplug a different plug wire each time) and see if in one of the tests the knock goes away. If it does, you've got a rod knocking. Time to pull the oil pan and survey the chaos.
Another possibility is a balance shaft bearing going/gone, but they're usually pretty constant in their protest. Either way that would me dropping the oil pan.

I doubt it's lifter tick from your description, that usually sounds to be coming from the top of the motor, and it doesn't sound like a "clack".

Good Luck.

its not a rod bearing ive already went threw that and know what it sounds like. i believe it is the timing belt idler or the timing belt tensioner pulley beaing things dunno exactly what to call them i pulled my t-belt and one of the bearings has some play and i got the new ones and am installing them now and there was a big different in how the new ones felt i believe the old ones in there are original so it was time to change them any way ill let you know if its what caused it. :laser:

when my timing belt tensioner pulley went it didn't sound like a ticking noise, it was more of a loud screeching sound.

ya just finished the new tensioners and i cleaned the lifters too so thats all i hear right now gonna wait till they get quiet i swear if it crank walked again im done with it im either goin awd or getting an s-10 xtreme. :laser:

i dont see ho wit could be a rob bearing the noise comes and goes and now with the lifters being quiet it almost sounds to be coming from the front near the accessories like the altenator p/s pump or water pump i took the power steering pump belt off and it wasnt that (cut it off i was pissed). havent gotten around to the altenator tho. i also changed the oil today and there was maybe a few like 3-4 metal flakes in the oil nothing like a bearing chewing it up. they may have just been reminats from last time the crank walked. but this morning going to school it was making the noise, but i switch school in the middle of the day and then go back both those trips it didnt make hte noise except for 2 seconds before i pulled into a parking spot. other than that nothing till after i changed the oil which i ran it for 5 min with no noise then changed a bad motor mount and took it for a spin and it came back like in or so into the trip thats when i got mad and cut the p/s belt off. so i dont know wha the heck is wrong please help me im getting fed up with my car again. :laser:

I sort of got the same problem as you, only it happens to my car after a cold night of being shut off. Also the sound goes away past 3k RPMs, but comes back below 3k until the car is fully warmed up. Sound is horrifying, sounds more like someone is trying to get out of the engine using a small jack hammer

Help would be appreciated although i'm not sure it's the "same" problem.

Hey i got around to pulling hte oil pan today. I couldnt last week cuz my mom took over hte garge for a yard sale but neway i checked all the rod bearings and they were fine then i took a screwdriver and pryed at teh crank yup its moves about 1/8 of and inch. So its crank walked im done with my laser for good now im not gonna rebuild it again its only has 10000 on the engine. So i will be parting it out every thing on it so if ya want any of my performance stuff let me know before i out it ip on the classifieds. Im eaither getting an awd dsm 1st or 2nd gen or a truck. Its not worth it to fix the laser if it dont got boost.

Hey guys my laser crankwalked for the last time LOL. It only had 10k on a rebuild and it crank walked again so im done with it. its not worth it to me to rebuild a nt again. So im gonna sell it or part it out what ever i can do. So if any one wants anything before i put it in the classefied pm me. I am prolly getting a awd dsm now or a truck. ill miss the nt section everyone in here has always been very nice and help full ill prolly still keep and eye on it though and give my input. thanks
