Hi,
Im about to install a new HU in my -99 GSX and noticed that the speakers are wired to an infinity amp located under the passenger seat, my question is if there is anyway to keep using the amp with my new HU, it seem like the speakers are wired to the amp, and from the amp to the original HU by a single large cable.. correct me if im wrong, and if so tell me how to go about.

best regards.

Come on ppl... there must be someone that has done this before, sure i can figure it out on my own but it it will take some time ..and i dont have time right now.
Anyone ..plz? :(

I did this years ago. Its been so long I probably wont be much help to ya. The large DIN cable your talking about has all the inputs for each speaker as well as power wires to get into the amp. What I did was cut the din cable and and 1 by 1 figured out which wire did what and just spliced them into RCA cables which could plug into my new HU. It worked and sounded fine but took forever and unfortuently I dont remember which wire did what cause I know longer have the stock amp. But I think they now make an adapter which would make your life much easier. Go talk to a stereo installer and tell them you need an adapter and they probably have something they can sell you. But to best honest, the stock amp doesnt really give you much. I eventually ditched it and wired the speakers directly to my HU and it sounded just as good.

Good luck!

Thanks for you reply John!

While i hade the interior ripped out i figured i might as well put in new speakercables and so i did, exept for the door speakers and the dashboard speakers.

I dont know if its like this on all 2G but on mine it was like this:
All the speakers are connected to the amp, so i thew the amp out and cut the the hole thing of by the center console and wired the door and dashboard speakercables to my HU. :thumb:

best reg.

You need to bypass the factory amp I took out the amp and cut the large wire tested each one with a meter and found my speakers and ran that up behind the radio.

does that really make a difference though (bypassing the amp)? Wouldn't the speakers give you less volume? I'm running off the stock infinity deck... Do you know where I could possibly get a DIN adapter at? I actually want an adapter along with something to split the cable, so I can plug my iPod into the amp and keep the HU connected. Holla back

I don't think you should do that......

What headunit did you buy? For instance, most of the new high powered headunits from Alpine or Eclipse actually have more power than the factory amp. You can get the adapter cable for the Alpines to run rca inputs through the AiNet port. The Eclipse decks have a mini headphone style plug you can just plug into for their AUX input. This would be the way to interface with an iPod. Just do yourself a favor and bypass everything. You can even do it by taking your wire harness adaptor for the car to new headunit and looking at what colors are what speaker wires. Cut it at the amp and run new wires to there and soilder them together or butt connect them. That is the easiest way to do it. ALSO, the dash speakers and the front door speakers can be wired together on the front channels of the headunit. Hope that makes sense for you. :thumb:

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...

Make sure you have the postives and negatives correct or you will have major phase cancelation problems... Translation: LOSS IN MIDBASS and LOWEND Freq.

i'm actually running the stock infinity head unit. i can't really afford to buy a new headunit at this point. i'm not saying i will do it... but just something i'd like to try maybe, if its at all possible.
