Hi,

It is raining really intense here in California and I started my eclipse GS spyder 96 after 2 months without driving it. I ran for about a mile and then a sudden noice came under the hood, the battery light went on and I have move in the steering wheel. I have double parked it now because i could not move left or right, the battery light won't move but the car will run in straight direction.

Could the rain be the problem? A wet battery or something, I really do not know. Does anyone of you guys knows a solution or i should wait until the rain stops, I am really desperate, I think I would call a towing service if I could not fix it in place :(((.

Please give me some advice, does anyone of you knows about this type of problem.

Thank you in advance,

Regards,

Svetlin

is the steering wheel locked in place?

is your ignition working still (can you lock and unlock the steering wheel) have you checked your alternator fuse?

Hi,

Yes, the steering wheel is locked in place but the car could move and reverse. I checked under the hood and found the problem - one of the belts connecting the alternator and power steering to the water pump is off the place it should be. I was advised to tow the car because I could not drive it like that. Do you think I could just put the belt back in place without raising the car, one of the ends of the belt is off and I see it but my friend told me that the other one is near the water pump and is impossible to reach without raising the car :(.

Uh, so with the key in, and the ignition on, you can't turn the steering wheel?

Or are you saying that the belt broke and the steering wheel is hard to turn? You can drive the car with no power steering (it's not easy though) I think in a 2G, just like the 1G the PS and alt use the same belt. You will only be able to drive the car as long as the battery lasts. Move it somewhere safe and swap the belt out... it shouldn't take too long.

My old 1G NT used to eat the PS/alt belt ALL the time. The things I put that car through. It was a bi*** to me, so I was a dick to it. Needless to say we didn't get along. Interestingly enough I do miss that car.

PS and alternator uses two seperate belts in 1g. I'm also questioning whether it's locked or just hard to turn? Do you know how to unlock a steering wheel?

BTW DSM and AAA should come in one pakage. ;)

Funny you should say that, she was much like the car. I don't miss her though!

One night, with the now ex gf, the belt broke and it started to overheat. She got all huffy because she thought I was going to fix it right then and there, it runined the night, blah, blah...

I left that car steaming and puking coolant on the driveway as I drove off in my Formula.

I think as payback, the rear caliper froze. It would heat the rotor cherry red causing the caliper to overheat and the brake fluid to boil over. Give it a few min to cool off and it would be fine again... THAT was a fun one to track down. I finally discovered the problem when I saw the red/orange glow one night.
