I was wondering how i would be able to tell if my turbo was blown on my 2g? the problem just started last night, all of a sudden the turbo just starts screaming and this loud whistling sounds just started up and its not the turbo spooling. :( . would it be worth it to now go with the big 16g clipped and ported evo III turbo and install kit? not looking for extreme power.

It's always a good time to replace the T-25 with something else :thumb:

As for telling if your turbo is blown.. check for excessive play in the cartridge and broken or bent fins (which will cause noise).

I would upgrade if the turbo is gone and the evo III big 16g is a pretty good choice. My friend runs a 7.5 (8th mile) with his on a 2g AWD.

As for checking, like he said...shaft play (take off the intake pipe and see if you can move the shaft with your fingers, it will have some play but you'll know if there's too much) or smoking (if you car smokes then the seals/bearings are worn out in the turbo, there will be oil in the turbo housings, intercooler piping, and/or exhaust etc.)

I'm 95% sure mine is blown now. It is a T-25 with 100k, 1/2 inch of shaft play, lots of white smoke out the exhaust, and it is burning oil badly. It also whistles as it tries to spool up, but the turbo lag is so bad now, that it won't spoll up until a little over 4 grand.

It's getting swapped out for a 50-trim tomorrow if the car can make it to the shop without dying.

You can check your turbo if its blown or not, just take the intake off the inlet of the turbo and check the shaft to see if there is any play. U also would be blowing out smoke of the exhaust and if the turbo is blown pretty good, if u drive close to a building or with the window down you can hear the shaft rattling around.

thanks for all the help guys. but its offical, my turbo is blown. but now after seeing what you guys had to say and telling me the diff paths to take. i have a pretty goood idea of what i am going to do next. thanks again :)

I'd either get a big 16g or a t28. Of course you'd have to get a 2nd gen. install kit with the 16g. But I think it's a better turbo. I'd definetly check into it though and make sure that it is for sure the turbo. Cuz as we all know turbos are not cheap LOL :dsm:

i have all of the above. so if my turbo is like that, would it prevent me from startin my car? i had to compression start it last nite, but this morning it was fine. no shaft play, but oil all over, and it whistles like a bi***. oil and coolant lines to the turbo are fine. car only has 62k. also my boost gauge reads 0 vac when i shut the car off.

so if you do have a blown t25. its possible that you will blow white smoke out of the exhaust. because when i get on it it doesnt smoke but when i let off and let back pressure out (puff)and mile long of white smoke and its not the hg bh becuase i did a leakdown and a comp. test all good so can it be the stock turbo

thanks

Yes, it was blown, and it was blowing white smoke out when I let off at first, but quickly grew to all the time.
