cooling problem!!! ah!!

hi everyone im new to the site. i got a quick question about my buddys 92 mirage 1.5l. for some reason it takes forever to warm up and wont idle until its warm. also, once its warm, the temp fluctuates from one extreme to the other, can someone please help? any and all info will be appreciated. i already gave him my advice, get a eclipse/talon/laser and leave that heap in the junkyard! :laugh:

Cooling system consists of:

1. Radiator
2. Radiator Fans
3. Radiator Hoses
4. Thermostat 180*
5. Water Pump
6. Temp. Sensor
7. Coolant Passages in the Block (engine)
8. Heater Core
9. Head Gasket.

Check each component for leaks. Ensure fans come on when pre-determined temp is met, Check color of coolant (if brown, clearish brown, anything but GREEN Flush and refill-Start over)

Cooling system stuff should be pretty simple to pinpoint, just be systematic in searching for the problem. Make sure you eliviate each component before moving on to the next.

If a headgasket is blown you could also have the problems you described.

for sure the thermostat is stuck open, put in a new one & see what happens.
