Changed to external and now very lean?

I have an evo 16g that was internally gated and tuned to the rite fuel curve with an afc. I switched to an external gate on the manifold and welded the internal closed. Now my af gauge is telling me I am running very lean under boost with the same settings. The only thing I changed was the wastegate setup. Any info on what happened or who to fix it would be great. Thanks.

How did you tune it? With the fun blinky gauge? If it was tuned properly and runs well then ignore the pretty lights.

It was tuned by turbo trix racing on a dyno. I dont understand how with the same setting it could run rich with the internal and now very lean with the external. Any ideas on whats goin on.

When you welded the internal wastegate shut did you allow it to air cool, or use water? You may have warped the exhaust manifold mating surface on the turbo and now there is an exhaust leak there. Just a thought. Sean

No the arm was just brazed. I did have the o2 housing off for a while could the o2 sensor gone bad? I can not figure this out.

Tried richening the afc alot more than the tuned settings and the af gauge will not move above the 2cd red bad from the bottum.

When the o2 sensor goes out it usually does not move on the blinkometer. Sean

Yea thats what I dont get. It only jumps to the second one. I have the settings richened up and I can smell that its runnin rich and at idle I richen it up to like +40 and I can hear the engine get to rich but the gauge wont move.

Anyone else have any ideas. The O2 sensor worked fine before I took it off could just go bad while I had it off or did somethin else go wrong?

Buy a logger, or make friends with someone who has one. Your disco gauge is useless.

I believe this is also what i'm suffering from right now. Fuel trims are all maxed out, o2 sensor is new, and when I used some seafoam last month, just before I shut it off from sucking thru a vaccum line I noticed some smoke from the front of the motor.

Sure, stock.

Actually I know most will say it's not, but besides the bc currently set at 10psi, a k&n, and a rewired pump it's all stock.


I actually have quite a few plans for this winter but my short term goal was to get a better handle on the tune of this car. If I can't in this configuration it doesn't give me much confidence for a more radical setup.

agreed....the A/F ratio gauge is practically useless unless you just needed to fill some space, a tuning tool that gives actual numbers instead of lights is much more helpful (ex. Datalogger). i dont thik there is anything wrong with the car if it drives like it did before then you should be good to go,
