I was driving my 95 eclipse with 1gen turbo today, and the car just shut off, i figured i blew a fuse, so i check and i blew the ignition fuse in the engine fuse box, i got another and tried to start the car, and it just kept blowing, but only when I try to start the car, if i barely turn the key the radio and lights will work, but when the car turns over for 1 second it blows... i found out my alternator was shot, when i replace it will this cure my problem? My friends dad said that this is more then likely the problem, im buying a new alternator tomorrow..... just wondering if you would think this would cure the problem ?

Also, when i disconnected the alternator line, I could start the car and it turned over fine, but I did this just to get the car home (1mile from wherer it shut off) because he said it would jack the belts up. So I believe the problem lies in the shotty alternator but I figured someone on here could tell me for sure.

Thanks for the help,
D. Adkins :dsm:

For some reason dsms eat alternators. Most likely heat transference from the downpipe. I had an alternator that went out once that was putting out 24+volts and kept doing the exact same thing you have described. Swap out the alternator and all should be fine. A word of advice buy it at schucks and get the lifetime warranty so when it goes out again, and it will, its free. One of the best investments I have made is the lifetime warranty on an alternator at schucks. Ive swapped it out at least 6 times in the last 2 years.

Thanks for your input, if anyone else has another opinion please post. But does anyone know why it is that DSM's eat the alternators? Even with my greddy intercooler it still overheats the alternator unit. Also, what is shucks's website?

Thanks,
D. Adkins :dsm:

I picked up a rebuilt alternator from Autozone today, they come with lifetime warranties as well, and when I installed it, and replaced the ignition fuse with a new one, the car fired right up. And is running great again. I appreciate your help. I think I am going to heat wrap my downpipe as well, to try to keep the heat off the alternator . So it doesn't go out as quick. Thanks for helping with my problem, it is corrected now. :dsm:

I knew it!! Thanks for the post to let us know its fixed! Check ebay for that header wrap thats what I use on the downpipe and yes it does seem to help as this is the longest lasting alternator yet.
