Is this the end of my car?

Hey everyone, I'd really appreciate some help diagnosing what happened today. I was on my way home to Chicago and about 50 miles into my journey, I heard a loud thunk and then a pop. Next thing I know, I hit the gas and the car doesn't accelerate. I can hear what sounds like really bad gear whine when the car is in gear, clutch out, and hitting the gas. The car will go into gear, but when I let out the clutch, it goes nowhere while the car keeps running. I don't think it is the clutch because it goes into gear but the car doesn't die when I let the clutch out without giving it gas.

Sooooo, what broke? Input shaft maybe? Any help would be appreciated.

can you move it at all?
or is the car totally 100% not going anywhere, can you shift through the gears with the car ON, and the clutch pushed in.

Sounds like your clutch is fried. You can shift gears with the car running? Let off the clutch in gear while car is running, and it doesn't die?

Xcelr8n: the car moves fine and I can shift through the gears with the car on and the clutch in.

MattGSX: I clicks into gear fine, even with the car on. When I let the clutch out, it is almost like it isn't grabbing, the car may inch forward really slowly, but it'll idle fine while in gear, clutch out, not moving at all.

Before this problem was there any signs, as a clunking sound, or did any gears grind as you shifted, or any other noise??

its your clutch maybe the presure plate... but its your clutch... mine did the same thing last month... on freeway loud ass pop... clutch wouldnt go into gear but then it would and if it did it wouldnt go anywhere and with it in gear it wouldnt even bog off like it would normaly.. well i ordered the clutch replaced it and its fine....

There was a little grinding going into second when the tranny was cold, but after about 3-5 minutes of driving, it went away. Also, I'd hear some clunking that sounded like it was coming from the differential once in a great while, but that's it.

maybe your sychros and maybe more of the tranny is going out... if it gets worse everything can shift and cause a total disaster... either get it rebuilt or junkyard for replacement parts

So the consensus is the clutch, huh? I figured that it wouldn't go into gear if the clutch went, but I'm sure you all know more than I do. The car is sitting at a shop for a week because I will be out of town until after the holiday. I'll update on what fixed the problem. Thanks again

Can you move the car around when the car is in nuetral? If you can't, you locked the transfercase. That happend to me last year :thumbdown .

Otherwise buy a new clutch kit, should be good to go.

The car isn't locked up at all.
