I have a 1992 Talon TSI and it was 20 deg yesterday and it was idleing at 1500 after it was totally warmed up and it stayed like that the whole time I drove it. When it is say like 50-60 deg out it idles at 1000 and it never stays where I set it. I blocked off the fast idle air valve and it still does it. No codes are coming up on the logger. I know it is running rich but, I don't think that would matter. Do you think I have a boost leak or a leak inside of the tb somewhere? I have not adjusted the idle switch cause I don't know how.

I dont think you should be running rich at idle, but how rich?

If you had a vaccume leak you would be running lean so you are getting to much fuel not to much air, it could be leaking injectors.
Also check the Idle position sensor. First see if the wire is conected, if so check visually and with your hand to see if the throtle is hitting the switch, if it isn't you will have to adjust it until the throtle can trip it. If thats not it use a contuosity tester to see if the switch is working, connect one probe to the clip on the sensor and the other clip to a ground on the throtlebody. With the throtle closed there should be continuosity(if thats even a word) -but electricity should go through th circut. with the throtle open at all there should not be any continuosity.

Also, to test for leaks, pull off the intercooler hose at the turbo. Block it with somthing that fits and clamp on it. Pull the furthest back vacume line on the tb and use a hand pump (or shop commpressor if your lucky like me :p ) and start pumping, listen for leaks.

When I did this on my car I found about a half dozen leaks!
egr gasket
tb gasket
injector gaskets
half of my vacume lines
seals on throtle plate shaft- if yours does this ask me how I fixed mine.

It runs really rich at idle and low throtle. My low fuel trim says 81% and it backfires at low throtle and blows black smoke out the exhaust. I richened it up to keep the o2 trim happy at around 100% at mid throtle but, by doing this it made low throtle rich like it veries from say 40% to like 115% as the throtle changes. In order to keep mid thr at 100% low and high have to be rich. I am using a safc2 to tune with. I will try checking/adjusting the idle switch tonight. My logger says my tp is 11.7% to 12.1% at idle which is a little high. I will check for leaks tomarrow.
I have my safc set to 20% low and 80% high for the thr point. Would changing the low thr point to like 35% make low throtle leaner or richer?

is the thottle plate closed all the way? If it is you might have to readjust the tps sensor. If not then you need to check why

My idle switch needed adjusted so, I did and my idle stuck at 850 where I set it and my tps now reads 9.7% I drove around for a while and the idle would go so low to like 500rpms when coasting and when I pushed on the brakes my car died like 6 times and my idle was lumpy not surging just idling beetween 700 and 400 rpms. My o2 trim went to 167% everytime when I let off the gas only and I was getting 15 counts of knock that I never got before. WTF is the problem? I made shure the idle position switch was perfect. I richened it up with no effect on o2 trims or knock and, I also moved my th points to 43% low and 80% high and all that did is gave me more torque. The exhaust was popping and backfiring when coasting also. I am doing a boost leak test tomarrow. My vacume on the gage reads 17 at idle. I am wondering if my fuel filter is clogged or somthing or, a bad o2 sencor mabey, not enouph fuel press? Please help guys.

I had a boost leak at the bov vacume line and one at the tb nipple, fixed them and that helped but, I can hear air escaping close to the tb somewhere. I put new gaskits on the tb and it made no differece. I can hear the air escaping when just idling. While driving, my o2 trim went to 125% after fixing these leaks so, a little better. I think it might be the egr valve leaking. I will let you know tomarrow. I did not pressurize the turbo but, I would not think it would leak because it has low miles. Mabey I can presure it tomarrow. The idle is better but still not right. Is 20psi too much? Where could I get a fuel press guage to screw on the fuel filter? Is there a better flowing more accessable fuel filter I could replace it with? Thanks guys

Just pressure test the system, listen for leaks and spay windex and listen for bubbles.
If you throttle body leaks at the plate shaft ask me how I fixed mine.

Ya, there is alot of air escaping from those. I think I made it worse when I put the leak tester on it cause now it only holds 10 vacume at idle and air is leaking like a mother f#####. Barely idles now. It also was leaking a tad from the biss screw. Also the fast idle air valve does not work after I unblocked it and hooked the coolant lines back on. How did you replace yours? Do I have to remove the tb again?

I had to special order these seals from Kentucky. They wont be hear until Thursday so I'm going to install my 34mm flapper and have slowboy port it while I'm waiting. I have a spare 90 tb. Can I use my 91-94 TPS on a 90 tb? I think that is the only difference.

I took apart my tb today and the tb shaft shaft seals are powdered like there not even there. So I guess I found the problem. I have not put in the new ones yet but I'll let you know how it goes when I do.

If you are talking about the brass ring seals pressed into the sides then this is how i fixed mine.
Take out the throtle shaft and carefully pry out the seals
there is a rubber part on the inside of the liitle rings, chip that away until it is just the brass.
Go and get two O-Ring kits from the parts store
Take the ones that slide inside the brass ring and over the shaft snuggly and put one in each brass seal
(each kit only has one of each size, thats why you need two kits)
Tap the seals back into the throtlebody and reassemble. I used a bit of vasaline to lube the seal
mine work perfectly and sealed 30psi. plus only cost a few bucks.

Now I just gotta figure out what to do with the other 40 O-rings I will never need

I'm not totally sure but if it is a really slow leak, dont worry about it. It is too minimal to effect anything. Do check/replace you pcv valve though. Air was coming out my dipstick during a pressure test and I figured out the PCV was faulty.
