HELP! Blown Head Gasket issues!!!

So My Buddy just blew his headgasket...Shop quoted him $1200 to repair it and said if one of the pistons is bad it would be another $1000. I can do the headgasket for him. How long would it take me to get it all done? I have installed all 2G bolt ons and replaced a turbo so I know my way around the engine compatment. Anything to look at specifically when the head is off? Its a 97 Auto GSX with 70K miles. THANKS GUYS!

Yeah the prices are ridiculous but people have to make a living right...anyhow, take the head to the machine shop so they check it for cracks and all the nice stuff. And why did they say one of the pistons was bad. How did they come to this conclusion? The only way for them to check something like this without taking anything off is a compression test. If the head gasket is blown…then you will get weird readings… and probably that’s where the head gasket failed on that cylinder if they ran that test…you would get a low compression readout. I would say they are trying to hustle your friend.

Thank you Captain obvious! Only kidding yah I searched but didn't find the exact answers I was looking for. I think the dealer was just trying to get some $$$ out of him. I will just do it myself. Thanks
