i got kind of a rubbing noise that at certain speeds will almost sound like a sizzling  almost like its frying bacon somewhere?

and today (i know this is wrong) pushed my car to about 100 and it got higher pitched and the steering wheel shook a little bit side to side. this happend b4 really bad cuz i didnt have the tie rod tight on that ball stud or w/e, cept now it should be. it was really bad b4 when id get on the brakes, now only really shakes when i get past like 55.

does this sound like a wheelbearing? wouldnt that kindda whine and give a little play in the steering. It seems like its from the front pass side. Maybe a cv? no clicking tho. maybe a ball joint is causing the shaking?

this car use to cruise at 100 (only a couple of times) very nice, now 75 seems kindda scary.

its not the engine making the noise cuz i turned it off and coasted in neutral with the clutch in.

abra cadabra wth is the magic answer?

Hey. I wish I coudl tell you what's wrong with your car, but instead I'm having a similar problem with mine.

What happened is I rolled over some leaves the other day and there was some plastic mesh in the pile so, with my luck, the plastic mesh got tangled in my drivetrain and I had to jack up my car and cut it all out. But even though I got all the plastic crap out my car is now making a really bad moaning noise whenever I drive it. Whether it's going forward, backwards, in gear or in neutral, brakes applied or not, the car moans as long as it's moving and I have no idea what the problem could be. It still feels pretty normal, although at certain times it does feel like something is rubbing the wheel causing a little vibration.

I know the cv joint on my driverside in the front needs to be replaced, but would that cause a moaning type noise? I also raised all four tires and I could spin them a little bit, obviously not much because it's AWD, but a bit back and fourth and nothing is rubbing the wheel or anything around it. Anyway, that's my problem, does anyone know what might be a cause? Thanks.

moaning  somebody asked me if i had a whore in the back but couldnt figure out where theyd fit  where was it wrapped around? hmm sob my front drvr brake shield rusted to hell and WAS rubbing quite a bit, yet that wasnt what i was hearing cuz it still does.

o yea my cv could/might be bad. the boot had a small slice near the inner band. no grease was leaking or anything but then when i swapped trannys i did the quick way and that thing was destroyed. here in sweet mn this things rusted something terrible so i used a splitboot OMG OMG now this piece of shit is whipping grease all over cuz i filled it up, but dirt shouldnt be getting in it. would a bad cv cause a shaky steering wheel?

Well to answer both your problems, no a bad cv will not howl. A bad wheel bearing will howl as long as the car rolls, and it doesnt discriminate as to wich direction. Your frying sound at speed could be a bad wheel bearing too. It would cause it to have a slight wobble in the steering wheel too. The bad cv boot youll want to fix that sooner than later. Youll have to go spend 5.00 bucks on a new axle nut kit cause It might not want to come off seeing as how theyre tightened to 280 ft lbs I belive. It would be easier to cut it off. You gotta do that to replace the wheel bearing anyway. Average price at a shop if you bring them the axle and knuckle assembly, 60 bucks just to press the new bearing in. I would recemend buying the bearing and seals before you go to the shop because the shop can charge you 80 ,for a 40 dollar bearing and they will! Total I spent 81 dollars and some change for the front left bearing and both seals and the nut kit. good luck!

sweet this sounds good. but first off what do u mean cut it off? like a cut on opposite sides of the nut parallel to the axel? muh buh duh? and then my dad screamed at me "NO YOU DONT NEED TO PRESS BEARINGS IN I CAN DO IT WITH A RUBBER MALLOT" which is what he did with his boat trailer, dont u need like a 10ton press or something? and yes he can be a HUGE spaz, especially about this car. how much longer could i run this badboy with out a disaster? will it lock the wheel up? maybe going over 100 today was a damn stupid idea :(

Im sorry but no you cant smak it back in with a mallet unless you want to risk breaking the knuckle. Wich it will if you start smakin it. You can pull the old one out with a bearing puller. but it is recemmended that you have them pressed in properly. And as to how far you can go on it? Well I cant speak for everyone, but my own personal car with a bad bearing had gone like 12,000 miles before I changed it. So no I would not recemend that you be cruising at mach 5 all the time. Just think about what would happen to your extremely light car having one tire lock up at 110. Driving back and forth to work though, thats up to you. :D
good luck!mike :dsm:

A bad cv joint will crack when turning. A bad bearing will whine down the road. Does it stop the whine if you turn one way? If you have had the tires off recently check for rust between the rotor and hub. If a bearing gives while driving I don't think it will lock up it will become loose and wobble around, not drivable. I know i just broke rule 3 but most mechanics have told me that. I had a shop replace my axles and when they beat them out they knocked rust between my rotors and hubs. I was pist when I left. It messed my caliper up due to the wobble on the way home. When I clean the rust out I noticed a small "screwdriver" hole in my new boot with grease coming out! Bah! Now i have a bad bearing. I'm sure it's because he beat the hell out of my old axles.
