emergency brake cable broke

My e-brake cable snapped a few days ago, and im not sure where it broke...at the rear of the car both of the cables are in tact at the calipers. at the store there is a right side cable and a left side one also. Does it start out as one and branch off into 2 or does it start out with two cables? thanks in advance

its starts with one the goes to a bracket.off the bracket it goes into 2 cabels.check there.
