Ok I basically removed as much as i could ( everything except the tranny- tcase and ps lines) My question is do i have to unbolt the bell housing part of the tranny to the motor or can you just pull the entire thing out? I was underthere today trying to unbolt the T-case and i guess i missed a bolt there are 5 and all i could see was 4, but anyways ive never done this before and i dont want to make a valuable mistake. Can the motor and tranny be bolted to an engine stand?

Thanks Josh

I always disconenct the power steering pump and lay it over the front, leave motor and tranny conencted, and pull the xcase off definatly. 5 bolts, yes.

no, not motor and tranny both on stand.

lift the engine side up higher than the tranny side, if you have abs, it wil be a bi*** to maneuvre it out.

What I do is just jack the car up kind of high, get your picker in there and hook it up to the two places it goes, the loop by the CAS and intake, and the other loop on the exhaust manifold to the right. I let some slack out in the left side, so you can pick the motor side up just a little more than the tranny side. Try your best to position the tranny pointing downward. You have to get around where the tranny mount bolts to the block (make sure you have removed the mount) either go to the left or the right to get around it, (somehow it makes more room for me). And yeah, take the x-fer case off, and the powersteering pump. Don't forget to pull the wires off to your oil pump and alternator. You might also want to take your battery box out for more room. I know it helps in 2g applications, but it can't hurt. Make sure your downpipe is disconnected, and make sure when you are pulling your block out, watch that the intake doesn't start ripping wires off of the firewall. Just go real freaking slow, and do a couple of pumps at a time, then look all around engine bay, above and under. Watch the car, make sure you don't start lifting it up in the air too. Make sure the axles are cleared, if you left them in the wheels. I find it easy to just take them out of the tranny, and sit them off to the side, instead of completely removing them. Hope this helps.

With the tcase on, you may have missed the little 10mm or whatever bolt a little above the transfer case. It's easy to miss. I prefer to take the trans and engine out separately. In which case, unbolt the tcase, unbolt the bellhousing from the engine, and yank the trans and engine out separately. The transmission and bellhousing are one piece, btw. The bellhousing doesn't come off separately like a normal non-DSM would.

OK thanks so i should just pull the tranny and block out and unbolt it then right?
Thanks for the help.

since i didn't have a cherry picker, i raised my car on all corners almost 2 feet in the air and lowered my engine/trans using my 2 1/2 ton jack and a nice piece of wood.. once the jack was lowered fully, i had two people lift the engine and trans using a chain, and i pulled the jack out, then slid everything from under the car :)

of course putting it in i rented a cherry picker.. i put the engine in first, then put the trans on as i couldn't get both in w/o running into problems.
