Ok, well I recently started overhauling my motor. Because it was starting up horribly, and sounded sick. Well, I changed the valve cover gasket due to an oil leak. That fixed the problem as one of the spark plugs was getting oil in it.

Then I moved on to it idling really roughly. The timing was a bit off so I fixed that. Now, when it runs everything sounds good, but it will "drop out". By that I mean, it will idle smoothly, then all of a sudden sound erratic. I don't know if this is normal...but I am beginning to think that I may need a new ECU.

If you guys think it could be something else please let me know, but, if you think that it most likely is the source of the problem can you please direct me to where i can buy an OEM ECU, or maybe even an aftermarket ECU?

Thanks, anything you give me if appreciated.

ok well, for a better description....

The car will be at a red light, it will idle normal and smooth...and then it will drop out sounds like it chokes, then go right back to a normal idle...it doesnt stall or anything and it drives fine...but it is really irritating me. ANY ideas?

What else have you done to the car other than replace the valve cover gasket? Like, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, etc etc.

well like i said.... i fixed the timing belt, and replaced the spark plugs and wires.... so now this is the only problem i have. Grant it, it could be much much worse, but it is just annoying ya know?

I tried that as well. Today, it is still doing it....my battery DOES need to be replaced though. What else could cause this?

a lot of things, bad plugs, bad plug wires, bad sensor...etc. Most repair shops will do free, or at least cheap estimates, you might wana look into doing that. Our DSM's are natorious for idle issues. I can't see how an old battery would couse it. If it is a sensor, then it's usualy the MAS sensor.... If I was you I would take it to a local shop and see what they say...

The other option could be fuel....a bad fuel filter could do it, and its a cheap fix....
