Hi everyone i am new here and i just bought a 96 Talon Tsi Awd and whenever i am driving the car and i try to give it more than a 1/4 throttle it seems like it starts misfiring really bad and i have to back off. But when i only give it a little gas the turbo spools fine and it accelerates accordingly. It just seems that it misfires when i try to give it more than a little gas it starts to misfire and bog really bad. The guy said that he had to replace the Mafs and he replaced it with a used one, Could this be the problem? If not what are some other things that i can check that could be the cause. Thanx in advance :talon:

Edit* the car is mostly stock with only a 3" exhaust and a injen intake

With DSM's dont bother guessing. Get a data logger and see whats going on inside your engine. It might be the MAF, it could be the timing, and it probobly needs a tune-up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter and look into ditching the mitsu maf for the 3" GM MAF with the maf translator.

i would check your intake hoses make sure there is a blowed of intercooler hose or make sure you have clamps on your intake to teh turbo or any open air source passed the maf will allow more air to get in than what the maf is reading... i jsut put in a 6 bolt and stuck everything together, no clamp on the intake to turbo, air was leaking around into the turbo... same setup it miss and whatnot... check all lines first.. then go t oa parts store buy a maf if they carry them.. try it...

if that works buy it or get another used one.. usually parts stores let you try it in the parking lot to see if it'll work.... jsut my 2 cents..

1) check for boost leaks.
2) replace your plugs and wires
3) fuel cut. (i doubt it but it could be)

hey I have the same problem on my 92 it is your timing or you need to rebuild your turbo the bearing inside the turbo might be sticking.

I agree with you...
I cleaned out my SMIC and found the silicone coupler at the UICP to IC was blown into 3 pcs.
I fixed that with a piece of rad hose, sweeeetttt.

Then I also found that my #4 injector seal was leaking fuel and all 4 injectors were leaking boost.
This would give me a studder when bringing boost on hard, but if I rolled it on, it would accel fine.
I've done new NGK BPR6ES gapped to .030" and NGK wires about 2 months ago.
I just did my injector seals last night, and what a difference, boost comes on and I nail it in 1st, fry 'em, then she just takes off beggin for 2nd gear with
a hard bark....

Check for boost leaks, it's amazing how much of an effect they have on performance. :dsm:

it's always the #1 problem. i've replaced so many couplings and clamps its not even funny. i've found boost leaks in the weirdest places. injector seals, tb shaft seals, couplings, smic was leaking, ect...

well the car is off right now getting a window replaced so i will check for boost leaks as soon as i get it back. How can i check to see if the timing is off. Thanx alot for the help guys im sure one of these things will fix it. Also do you think that if the Used Mafs that the guy used to replace the old one had the honeycombes taken out (i have read that if you are running stock boost and injectors this can cause you to run extremely lean) could also be causing the problem or is that a long shot?

yea, the honeycombs could be a problem if they have been removed, esp without an safc to adjust your idle. just open up the MAF and see if they are in there.

Change your profile dude....
I had to look up at your 1st post to make sure you were running a Turbo DSM.

A timing light would tell you about your timing, but get a chiltons or a haynes manual so you know exactly what the procedure is and how to hook it up.

Good Luck......

I already bought both TB gaskets, now I need to buy TB shaft seals.....
Then I'm sure once I get that dialed, i'll find something else.
Oh well, by the time I'm done this thing should roll on.......

now if the head has been shaved then when you time it, iot wont be on the right notch. if you have a hard time do it buy some adjustable cam gears

First, pull out whatever non-NGK plugs are in it, and replace them with BPR6ES gapped at .028". And, get a new set of ignition wires, anyone's premium stuff (even Wagner or Taylor, whatever's easiest to get and less than $50). Try that and a boost leak test before anything else.
