Please don't flame me until you read all the post. I did a search for cold idle problems, but none seemed to answer my problem.
Problem #1
I just replaced the throttle position sensor on my son's 91 GSX. He was getting a CEL when it would get hot outside and he'd step on the throttle, getting stutter and cutout. While driving at steady speeds it ran fine, but CEL would still come on occasionally. Code indicated a TPS error.
I made no other adjustments other than the TPS and that was adjusted with the .017 shim and using a ohm meter, according to all I've read and manual.
Now the car runs rough while in cold idle, like it's only firing on three cylinders. No idle surge like a bad FIAV. Once it's warm, the missing clears up and runs smooth.
I do know the #1 plug wire is bad and doesn't fire consistently so I've got a new set of magnecors ordered for it.
Problem #2
Oil in the plug well.
There is oil collecting in the plug well, not much but enough to be annoying. It doesn't appear to be coming from the oil filler cap, as it collects there even with the plug wire cover in place. The gasket is new and not leaking around the outside. Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch for your assistance and any guidance you can give me.
Brian

A little further clarification on problem #1- engine runs rough a all engine speeds until warmed up.

Oil in the plug well.replace the intire valve cover gasket there r seals around the plugs that need to be replaced.might as well change it all out.when new pulg wires come in and valve cover gasket replaced let me know what happens. :laser:

I don't think the oil is coming from the seals around the plug wells. the plug boots are clean and oil free. Just the tops of the boots, the part that's exposed just under the cover have oil on them. There are two tiny holes, vent holes I would assume, in the valve cover, located on the front drivers corner. Could it be possible it's coming from there?
