Waterloo,
I live in Ontario, Canada we have to do etests whenever the vehicle changes hands or every 2 years. I just failed my first one after aquiring my talon. I need a pass to register it in my name.

Here are my results: 50kmhr (dyno)/limit/Idle/limit
HC(hydrocarbons) ppm 85/67/122/200
CO % 1.32:cry:/0.37/0.51/1.00
NO ppm 566/501/ n/a / n/a

As you can see my carbon monoxide is thru the roof.
What do you guys do to ensure a pass? Do you use that "guaranteed to pass" stuff?

I think I am going to go drive the piss out of the car for an hour before the next test and use that emission additive.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

you should check if you have a catalytic converter if not thats why your not passing or you can go to a place and let them pass you by paying a little extra. :D

I have always been told if u can't pass emissions go to the store and get some regular rubbing alchol and dum that in there because it burns so clean and pure. I dunno You might wanna try it.

That guaranteed to pass stuff only works (they claim) if your car is in 100% working order and emissions system are perfectly working. If that was the case then you would be guaranteed to pass. In other words don't waste your money. I can sell you a 10oz bottle of gasoline for 29.99 too if you want. I guarantee you'll pass if your car is 100% too.

Its not the garanteed to work stuff its isopropyl alcohol, or however u spell that, go to the grocery store and buy some alcohol and dump that in ur gas tank just b4 u go to test ur emissions but make sure u run the car like 5 minutes after u dump it in to make sure its got it in the engine, it worked for plenty of cars we had back in the day when emissions was around.

Well I disagree somewhat, because we had an old 86 benz, did a tune-up, failed miserably on 2500RPM hydrocarbons. So all we did was go over to pep boys the next day, dump a bottle in, and go take the test again. And we passed with no problem! BTW there was an 1/8 tank of gas left before we dumped it in to ensure a decent gasoline/alcohol mix.

Call it a coincidence, or luck, but it worked for me, so in my mind that stuff is worth it's weight in gold if it passes the old car. Now, im sure it's just overpriced isopropyl (but like a dumbass I didn't see what the "active ingredient" was before I threw it out) but it worked so who cares, right? Honestly I don't mind getting "ripped off" a dollar or two from buying repackaged isopropyl alcohol every 2 years.

I am going for my emissions test tomorrow again. I'm going to try some isopropyl alcohol. I have less than a quarter tank of gas less so I'm set I'll post my results so you guys can see if the alcohol actually makes a significant difference.

Thats the first time I have ever heard anybody say that it worked for them. I'll keep that in mind for the next time sombody asks about it. I did try it in my own car and it didn't help at all so unfortunately I didn't have great results with it like you did. Had I put more in I probablly could have passed though...

Yeah I dunno, I guess it's just one of those things! Well my buddy's tag is about to expire pretty soon so if he doesn't pass the first time (he probably won't), I'll let him try the stuff and I'll tell you what happens. Maybe it was one of your mods? I mean a DSM (if that's the car your talking about) and a stock 86 benz (2.3L i-4) with a beat up cat are two different animals. But I really think the mix has something to do with it's success, since alcohol has virtually no emissions, you want to burn a lot of that during the sniffer test. Anyways good luck to whoever tries it, and make sure not to have too much gas!

BTW if I can find the two results sheets (before and after) I'll scan them in, but since we sold the car over a year ago that's doubtful, but I might get lucky.

Well I failed again. I decided to just follow the guaranteed to pass (GTP) instructions. I ran a tank through with the GTP and then added about a quarter tank of gas and went for the test after a good warm run on the highway.

HC ppm, (limit 67) (newreading 86) (first test 85)
CO%, (limit 0.37) (new reading 1.13) (first test 1.32)
No ppm, (limit 501) (new reading 579) (first test 566)

conclusion:
Guaranteed to pass does little to nothing. Two of the three gases actually got worse after the GTP.

I'll admit that my car must have some emission issues. I am thinking a clogged cat. My boost will not go past 7-8psi with or without a manual boost controller.

Wait, you said you ran the GTP through, THEN added gas and went? Hmm, the way I did it was so the car was burning the GTP and gas during the test, and it worked for me (that's how I was told to use it with the best results, so I didnt bother reading the instructions). Oh well, maybe your cat is clogged or beat. Try knocking on it, and if you hear something rattle around, then yeah it needs replacing. I guess with a car you care about, the best way is to fix it instead of band-aid'ing it with GTP anyway. Good luck though!

Well, I failed my first time I blew after I bought my car (same regulations here in Washington as for you). My CO2 came out to a 1.52 which is pretty damn high. I also heard about the "trick". There is a shop here in Puyallup, WA that sells I believe pure Menthane. Your guaranteed to pass for $5 a gallon (needing about 1 Gal. to each ¼ tank). Well, after dumping in a gallon, I took a 30 minute drive and went back to the emissions testing place the same day and blew a 0.16. Quite a difference. Many people have supposedly blown straight 0's on the stuff.

I can get a high flow cat installed for between $250 and $300 Canadian. Which I might do. Anybody know where I can get some "menthane" to pass in the meantime. Isopropyl should basically accomplish the same thing but I would have to put a lot in. I think that in order to pass, the car would have to running almost pure alcohol because it failed so bad on the Carbon Monoxide.

The bottle on the GTP said to run it thru then put more gas in before you test.
I failed really badly so my car needs some attention.

Josh

Well from what I've seen, most high flo cats suck for emissions purposes, you'd be better off replacing it with a stock cat and then swapping in a test pipe or something else after the test. Most high flo cats are basically straight pipes, they do lower emissions a little bit but no where near what a stock replacement cat would do. Good luck though!

Anyone else have input on this menthane? I am going to try to pass with absolutely zero emissions equipment on my car. No cat, no canister, no 15 vacuum lines running all over the place. I am doing this mostly because I bought a JDM engine and I never had the original engine in my car as I bought it without an engine. My plan, seeing how i will have DSMlink by the time I try to pass, is to richen the mixture up and pour in some of this menthane. Is it possible to pass with no emissions crap? input?

You have an awd dyno...daym that sucks for you. I know of someone that passed emissions w/ no emissions equipment and a 3' turbo back w/ high flow on the first try.

When I bought my car, it had passed emissions with the EGR blocked and no cat on just regular old pump gas, no tricks. First thing I did when I got it though was start fixing the emissions equipment. Got a cat on it, unblocked the EGR, reconnected all the missing vacuum hoses. After that, I have to say that there really aren't that many hoses. IMO, there's no real good reason at all to NOT have the emissions gear working. You can go fast AND be friendly to the trees :thumb:

My reason is that I dont want a cluttered engine bay, and I don't have all the equipment. Unfortunetly there is a sizable difference when you get up there in HP, the cat at least.
