So long story short... My friend just bought a 92 Talon, it's in rough shape so we're taking it slow. Few weeks ago it decides it doesn't want to run anymore. We take it to the dealership, find out it's the cam angle sensor... We get a used one off a shop, and install it ourselves. Problem is now, idle is VERY bad... It shoots up to 2000, down to 1500, back up to 2000, down to 1500, and back up again. It does this for a while and then sometimes stays around 1500 (Still very high). And once he's rolling you can feel it... I don't know how to explain... hop/skip.. Sometimes almost stails... Maybe it's misfiring?

We've never installed a Cam Angle Sensor before (the whole piece, casing and all). My question is does it need to be adjusted? and if not... What else do you think could be the problem now? I know he's due for a timing job. Would that also factor?

Thanks for any help,

Josh This is the likely culprit:

We get a used one off a shop, and install it ourselves.
-What was the condition of the used CAS (cam angle sensor) before it was Installed? There is a possibility that used CAS has failed.
Correct installation of the CAS is very critical and base timing must be checked and verified.

Problem is now, idle is VERY bad... It shoots up to 2000, down to 1500, back up to 2000, down to 1500, and back up again.

- Incorrect CAS installation and poor timing can cause this.
- A failed ISC motor can cause erratic timing.
- A failed O2 sensor.
- (very remote possibility) A failing ECU can also cause poor idling.

Josh it imperative that you re-confirm and MAKE SURE the used CAS is OPERATIONAL and Installed correctly!!!

Good Luck

the CAS is like a dizzy on those not so cool cars with dizzies. remember to advance ur timing u can turn the dizzy or to retard the timing you turn the dizzy the other way. CAS does the exact same thing. You need to get a timing light and make sure the CAS is in the correct position.
