no dash lights continued...

I am guessing you have a short in the dash lighting circut. If the head unit is a new install, and everything was ok before, double check to make sure the unused connections are insulated accordingly. This includes the factory lead for the radio illumination that is connected to the dash lights.
Good Luck

I know this is an old thread- but trying to fix my problem I came across it.

I had a similar problem in my 92 Stealth- the illumination wire for SOME (mine was a clarion) heads are not hot. I hooked the illumination wire up, no dash lights, rheostat got hot. I finally unhooked the wire- yay! All dash lights back on. Radio worked fine regardless.
