Alright, so im leaving work friday night, and as i start to roll out of my parking space into the parking lot, i couldnt have been going 5 mph even, i hear this weird almost snapping noise, and my engine makes the most hideous, ear piercing, very loud low pitched grinding noise i have ever heard... I immediately shut off the engine out of pure fear. got out of the car, looked around, saw nothing on the ground that could have came off of my car, popped the hood saw nothing unusual about the engine considering it was dark and raining. confused, i started the car again to check if it was still spasaming, the engine started, but still made that ungodly sound. My guess is either crankwalk out of nowhere without any symptoms, or maybe skipped belt or something. car is a 97 tsi with 70,500 miles, just did an oil change last week, and the only mods i have to my car are an injen intake and a vented stock bov. please help me figure out what is wrong with the thing and if the engine is salvagable. I work at a mopar dealership so at least its in a parking lot that it can be looked at, but i would like to know what i can do before it is looked at on monday. Thanks guys   :(

i really wasnt paying much attention to my rpms since i was no more than 5 seconds into first gear and something popped and my car immediately started screaming. The funny part is that my engine still restarted after i shut it off with no problem, and it ran, but that noise was still there.

off topic but why in the hell do you have a vented stock bov?? are you just plain dumb?

Check the harmonic balancer and make sure it isnt coming apart.

What he said. Mine came apart on me last week and also made a horrible noise. And before you ask what a harmonic balancer is, it's your crank pulley. Check it out and let us know.

well the reason that i have the stock bov vented is because the injen intake that i bought for my car was for my tsi, but at the time i didnt know to look for one with a bov return inlet, which it didnt have, and i was too lazy/broke to get another one with a return tube attached, and it ended up sounding pretty cool (inner ricer in me) and it didnt stall, just some slightly harder shifts, so i left it. anyway: I found out that my belt slipped off the pulley on the alternator and put the belt back on... but the pulley farthest to the ground in the middle of the pulley setup is now wobbling when i start the car. I thought it probably would be either the crankshaft or the water pump considering where it is located, if that pulley is in fact my harmonic balancer, how the hell do i get my car back on the road?

That is the harmonic balancer. Dont drive it until you replace it. 4 12mm bolts hold it on. Loosen the accessorie belts and swap the "crank pulley" and reinstall the belts. Thats all there is to it.

so your saying i just have to buy a replacement pulley and bolt it on? I dont need new bearings or any other parts besides the harmonic balancer?

well thank god for me being a complete moron when it comes to engines, because i forgot to look at the ac belt on my car. What ended up happening was my ac compressor blew up, tossed the belt, which knocked off the belt on my harmonic balancer. Then, the ac belt was stuck on the underside of the crank pulley which made it seem like it was wobbling like the pulley was blown when in fact it was just rubbing against the stray belt. What i thought was gonna be a massive pulley overhaul ended up being a set of pliers and cutting off the ac belt and putting my crank belt back on. :thumb: ... thank god my mechanic looked at it before just putting all the parts on that i bought. I have no AC in the car anymore, but it saved me a solid $300 i cant complain. I couldnt go another day without hearing that turbo, it was killing me.
