No 2nd gear!!!

Ok I put in my jdm trans... (awd/fwd) its from a 1990 car. ans my car is a 1993 tsi... It ran perfect first then when i tred to downshift into 2nd it grinded then stopped grinding, then now there feels like theres no 2nd gear? it feels liek theres nothing in the shifter when i try to shift into 2nd.. what is wrong? please dont say my trans is broke, i just put it in today

Im beginning to hate these damned DSM trannys. What type of fluid did you use. Also did you over fill it? Mine did some funky shit when it was over full. It used to grind into every gear. I made the mistake of putting fluid in while the nose of the car was jacked up. 2.8 quarts no matter what, preferably pennzoil syncromesh 85/90 full synthetic (gl-4). do you have the clutch adjusted properly? Did you replace the clutch aswell?

hmm mabye i over filled it... that will fudge it all up? i have 80/90 lucas gear oil.. no its the same clutch. but good yet... ill try the fluid and let yah no whatty happend then... thanks

cool, yeah take the fill plug out while the car is level and just let the excess come out until it stops leaking. I hope that does it for you

ok i just drained it from the fill plug... there was a little excess, but not much.. the fluid looked like it had little gold peices in it.. .i think.... but that didnt help, still messed up.. thanks anyway.....

ok i guess the 2nd gear is gone... luckily the trans is under warranty yet! so looks like i gotta take that shit out grrr friggin dsm's... but it was soo good to drive it again.. i was driving around my brothers hooked up 4.6 mustang and then i hopped in my car when it was done... wow let me tell you. i like pissed my pants my car felt so fast !!!

Yeah thats a sign of bad syncros. Thier actually made out of brass. Thats strange that it happened the first day. Someone must not have assembled that thing properly. Good thing youve got a warranty!

ok update... reverse dissapeard now... i cant find the gear with the shifter... i am thiniking its the linkage since its a 90 trans and i have a 93 tsi IMO. somebody help please...

Dude, no wonder you cant get it to work. Look in the vfaq about linkage for the 90 conversion. You need a different shifter handle and cables. The 90 is a beast all to its own. Why did you step down to a 90 in a 93? The 93 is a stronger tranny.

yea i asked around and alot of people said they didnt have to change anything but i got nothing to lose so ill go to the yard to get shifter n shit. the reason i got the older trans is its a jdm and i wanted awd/fwd (switchable one) and that came only in 90 i belive...

I know how you feel about the awd thing. I wanted to convert mine to awd too, but... It would bee alot cheaper and easier to just buy an awd car and tweak it. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a good 90 turbo tranny these days? (for a guy on a budget?) Im picking mine up today 500 bucks shipped from texas

... i have always had an AWd .... i just got a AWD/FWD switchable transmission.. any way i fixed it! it was just the one square washer thingy mo bob hold the one shift cable in place... it was floating around ... yep those are 97 GT wheels! used bondo to fill in the pony then painted the wheels...

Do you have 4th gear? Make sure that the cables are secure on the tranny.

whoops, read the whole thread except for the last entry. Silly me. I actually had this happen to me after I did my clutch job. One of those bolts holding on the cables to the tranny fell off and I lost all the bottom gears. It felt like I was wobbling around a joystick.
