Well, here's the rundown. I rebuilt my engine only to find out that i was having coil pack problems. I've gotten two used ones off of a friend that were working in previous cars. Well, I've put both of them in and no luck. The cars turns over and is gettign fuel, but no spark. I took the plug wores out and checked for spark against the rod that holds up the hood only to find out I have none. Am I missing something? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. L8er. Also my car is a 1990 and so is the coil pack.

I took a look at the Haynes manual. If the two coil packs you put in are known good coil packs, then it might be the power transistor, which provides power to the coil pack and is mounted somewhere along the driver's side of the intake manifold. I tried to look to see where it was on my '90 TSi, but it was dark outside. The picture in the Haynes manual is unclear, Chilton's doesn't even have a picture, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Make sure when you're replacing the power transistor that you specifiy it's for a 1990 vehicle. It's different than the 1991 unit, and different from the 1992 - up engines.

Hope this helps :talon:

Thanks bro. I'm going to check tomorrow to see if it's getting an electrical current to the coil pack. If so then I know it's the pack or something along those lines; if not then I'll check that transistor. Thanks again. :thumb:

Also check your MPI fusible link located on the top of your positive battery cable. I had the exact same problem as you and it was a short in my O2 wiring that kept blowing that fuse.
The power transistor should be right under the coil pack and held in place by three 10mm bolts.
FYI, I did the three tests that the Haynes maunal says to do when testing a coil pack and both the 1990 and spare 1991 I have failed the test. I think either the book is wrong or I did it wrong because I don't think either of them are bad. If anyone here has ever followed the Haynes on testing coil packs, leave some feedback here.
