check engine light

hey whats up i have a 1990 gs,it has been seeting for about 3 months becouse i was putting lowering springs,bodykit,intake and getting it ready to paint.well today i started it up and took it for a test drive for the first time since i started everything.and my check engine light is on.i thought it was a ignition problem becouse one of my wires at the egnition switch was cut so i fixed that and it still is on i checked everything i could think of.and there is a little smoke coming out the back.does anyone have a clue of what it may be?even though i diddnt drive it everyday i went out there and started it for awhile and i also kept up with the general tuneups.any ideas would be very apreciated thank you.
