I hadn't really noticed it before now but driving around (mainly in taking turns and backing up) the rear end has a nasty metallic squeal/screech noise which if i apply the brakes seems to go away. When i had the car parked in the garage i tested several ways of moving the car to see if i could reproduce the noise, well pushing down on the rear end made no noise so i figured nothing to do with the shock/struts, however rocking the car back and forth produced the noise as i had heard it driving around...if i pull the ebrake and rock the car no noise is produced......

any ideas?

if you can reproduce it while it is the garage by rocking it have some one lay down under the rear end and look for it as you rock.

well taking your suggestion i took and had my brother push it while i was underneith, and it is defineately coming from the passenger side rear brake, i noticed the sheilds are pretty much rusted off, and touching slightly but not enough to cause this type of noise, so im assuming the brake is bad?

If the noise goes away when you brake it could just be the wear indicator. Most pads have a small piece of spring steel that contacts the rotor when the pad has worn to a certain threshold. Time to go to autozone and pick up some new pads.

I have the exact same problem. I caused it while taking off an axle and messing around with the caliper. It makes an (embarrasing) annoying squealing sound as the wheel spins. I haven't gotten around to figuring out what it is, but I did take a quick look and I couldn't see anything obvious.

I suspect the metal tab.

I think i have this same problem on my new 1g awd, It sounds like a knives sharpening each other and its consistent with a driver speed.I believe mine is coming from the front drivers side though.

Here is the odd part: I just replaced the brakes all around, new pads and new rotors....still makes the damn noise!!!! You think maybe one of the cv joint bearings went out guys? At least i have brand new brakes!
