I've been lurking around for a bit and havnt really posted at all, but Ive got a slight problem that I can diagnnose so I thought you guys might be able to help. First of all, I'm fairly knowlegeable about DSM's but have done pretty much no internal motor work at all. This is my 4th DSM and I've done all work on them from installing UICP's to Installing a new AWD clutch by myself and cleaning the lifters. Anyways, on to the problem.
The other day while I was driving home from work in my 91 AWD I thought I heard a ticking noise coming from the engine bey. I live less then 1 mile from work and dont reach speeds above 30MPH and probably only hit 3500RPM's max. I turned the radio down and when I was stopped I didnt hear anything but when I got to about 1500 RPM's I thought I might have heard something but couldnt tell because the O2 housing has a blroken stud so the exhaust is pretty loud. I get home and pop the hood while its running. I hear absolutely nothing. This car doesnt even have lifter tick yet so the only thing I heard was a slight exhaust leak coming from the busted O2 housing. I shrugged it off as paranoia and closed the hood. About 2 hours later I go out and get in the car. I back out of the driveway and everything is fine. As soon as I get about a block away from home I hear what I think is the noise again so I push in the clutch and sure enough I hear it for sure. I go back home and pop the hood. Yes, there is deffinately a tick. It is louder than lifter tick, but deffinately not a rod knocking. It sounds like a lifter or a valve. I got a wooden dowell and held it to different parts of the car and listened with the other end on my ear. the noise seems to be coming from the head. The next day I removed the lifters and inspected and cleaned them all. They look great as does everything in the head as its only got 20K on it. I also turned the crank by hand with the valve cover off and all of the vlaves seemed to move up and down with the camshaft lobes. Next I do a compression test and I get 170PSI across the board which pretty much rules out a bent valve. But before I did the compression test I took it out for a 5 minute drive to make sure the battery was charged. I noticed that the noise increases speed with the RPM's and that it goes away above ~2800 RPMs. I'm stumped. The only thing left is to pull the head and check the valves out in person but I would rather avoid this if anybody has any other solutions. I have another rebuilt head, but like I said this one only has 20K on it. Thanks in advance!

And ive experienced the EGR ticking when I had a bad ECU, luckily the new ECU fixed it. This was a different type of ticking anyways. It is more of a tapping than a ticking. Thanks for the reply!
